Since then, the legality of sports gambling was left to state-level government, with several states quickly taking the essential steps to legalize sports betting.

Before the Supreme Court ruling, Nevada happened to be the only state where a bettor could wager on the results of a game. However, with the federal ban being lifted last May, many states have successfully legalized sports gambling, and others are in the process of doing so. Along the same lines, a few states are even introducing new legislative proposals that will open the door to sportsbooks.

1. Arkansas[/B]

The first official sportsbook in Arkansas, Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort, started operating in July, and from what we know, numerous others are on their way. But the state does prohibit mobile online wagering.

2. Delaware[/B]

Delaware fully legalized sports betting less than a month after the US Supreme Court’s decision to lift the ban on sports gambling. In June, three casinos started operating sportsbooks. Currently, the state is looking to offer mobile betting as well as add additional locations.

In Illinois, legalization to allow sports gambling was passed in June. It will turn the gambling lawful in several locations, including at Wrigley Field, both offline and online. In the state, sports betting was already permitted starting March 9, 2020. But in-state collegiate is off-limits under the new law.

Indian made wagering on pro and college sports-legal since September 2019. Both mobile and in-person betting is allowed at various locations.

In 2019, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed bills that allow for both sports betting and online gaming in Michigan. Nevertheless, casinos in the state only started taking wagers in March of 2020.

In Mississippi, the state enacted a law in 2017 that allowed for sports betting. Later, the first bets were placed on August 1, 2018.

New Jersey has long wanted to legalize sports gambling. In fact, this was the state behind the case that led to the Supreme Court striking down the federal ban on sports betting. So, as you can imagine, the state wasted no time legalizing sports gambling after the decision.

New Jersey’s first sportsbook opened on June 14, 2018. Currently, Atlantic City and the Giants/Jets NFL stadium, alongside other locations, now offer legalized sports wagering.

New Mexico’s case is quite unique as the state hasn’t passed legislation explicitly allowing sports gambling. However, there is a specific loophole that makes it possible to bet in-state legally.

The current state laws don’t explicitly prohibit sports betting. It is also not banned as a Class III game. Thanks to this, the Pueblo of Santa Ana tribe has opened a sportsbook at its in-state casino.

In New York, the bill was passed in 2013, making sports gambling legal at the state level. Nevertheless, the first official sportsbook in the state didn’t open until July 2019. Sports betting was legalized in Virginia in April 2020. Most of the sportsbook apps went live by the end of 2020. Virginia also approved casino gambling in four locations during the 2020 election.

The Sports Wagering Lottery Amendment Act of 2018 came into effect in Washington D.C. in May 2019. The city then went on to launch its sports wagering website and app that is run by the DC Lottery.
