Last week, Brazil began cracking down on unregulated online gambling by blocking over 2,000 websites. This move comes amid growing concerns about addiction, particularly among vulnerable populations, and follows a new law passed in December 2023 to regulate and tax the industry.
While online betting was legalized in 2018, other forms of gambling like casinos and slot machines remain illegal in Brazil. The government estimates that over 52 million Brazilians have engaged in online betting in the past five years.

Some of the betting companies that have not been authorized to operate in Brazil are taking their case to court. Others are seeking state authorizations that could give them the rest of the year to seek approval from the federal government.
