Default Cambodia to ban online gambling, citing "threat to social order"

On Sunday, Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen announced he is banning online gambling, saying that the industry had been used by foreign criminals to extort money.

This, of course, comes on the heels of last week's news that saw the Chinese Embassy released a statement saying that Chinese companies and individuals in the Philippines would be “punished in accordance with Chinese law” for any involvement in illegal gambling. According to reports, China is Cambodia's close ally and its biggest donor and investor.

    From Xinhuanet.com:

"The Royal Government stops granting principles and licenses to operate online gambling businesses inside and outside Cambodia from the day of signature on this directive onwards," he said.

"For valid licenses holders, they will be allowed to operate until the licenses are expired. After that, the Ministry of Economy and Finance will not renew their licenses anymore," he added.

The prime minister also ordered the authorities at all levels to intensify investigations and suppression on all illegal online gambling businesses in order to maintain social security and public order.

The move came after some foreign criminals have run underground online gambling businesses here and used them as a front to operate telecom scams in order to extort money from victims inside and outside the country, he said.

"Cabinet minister, interior minister, economy and finance minister, ministers and heads of relevant institutions, national police chief, national military police chief and authorities at all levels must take strict measures to implement this directive effectively," Hun Sen said.

It doesn't make any sense at all (and it defies logic) for them to ban online gambling entirely just because of this threat. They just need to catch the criminals involved instead.

"China is Cambodia's close ally and its biggest donor and investor." China is pumping cash into Cambodia. Hence it makes every bit of sense to take this stand. Or do you proposed Cambodia gives China the 'BIRD'...

Seems China is Cambodia's whipping master, and when China tells them to JUMP, they ask... How high master!
Put another way, China is Cambodia's puppet master.

The criminal aspect maybe true or maybe a smoke-screen in a veiled attempt to justify the closure.

Certainly does appear that China is flexing their muscle in these markets. Just a first step I am sure.
