Federer showed his class by comfortably beating Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 after the Russian initially exerted a lot of early pressure on the 6 times champion.

Federer currently sits as joint favorite beside Nadal to win Wimbledon at 2/1.

I'll say this Adam - I grew up in a great era in tennis, with Connors, Nastase, Vilas, etc., moving on to Borg, McEnroe, then Lendl, Edberg, Wilander, Becker, and others who were fully capable of winning a Slam, like Andres Gomez, Pat Cash, Johan Kriek, Yannick Noah, et al. And of course, Sampras vs. Agassi was the signature rivalry of the 1990's.

From the mid-1970's through the 80's I would say that it was a golden age of tennis in the Open Era, and that was not just because there were a number of players who could win a Grand Slam in any given year, but because of the personalities involved. Even as people talked about Lendl having little personality, that "ice-cold" nature was a part of his persona.

All that having been said, I'm not sure there has been a rivalry in the Open era that has been as good as Federer vs. Nadal. They've got more Grand Slams between them than other duos, and what makes it even better is that the less decorated of the two (Nadal) actually has the head-to-head edge. And then you have Novak Djokovic waiting in the wings, with the ability to unseat either one, and then there's also a guy like del Potro, who has beaten both Nadal AND Federer on his way to Grand Slam title. I'd say that even if you're an American and not represented as much as you'd like to be, this is a very interesting era of tennis.

Hi CJ,

I agree with you on the Sampras vs. Agassi rivalry, I was a big Sampras fan when I was younger but like you say Federer v Nadal is something else. The 2008 Final which ended 9 - 7 in the final set was arguably one of if not the best match of all time!

I think the top 5 or 6 (if you include Roddick) are so exciting to watch because as you say they can all potentially beat each other.

One interesting fact I find is that Murray is the only top 10 ranked player excluding Nadal to have a positive head to head record against Federer (currently 8 - 6 to Murray). This just goes to show you that in theory any of the top guys can beat each other at Wimbledon, although Federer's 90% match winning record at Wimbledon is phenomenal.
