Default Chico Network aka BetOnline Pulls a Fast One w/ 1.2 Million Bad Beat Jackpot

Bad beat jackpots are a thing in live and online poker. Extra rake is taken, a "bad beat drop", which is put into the progressive prize pool for the bad beat.

When a player suffers a bad beat (varies in difficulty by card room) under certain conditions, the jackpot is paid out. Typically the lion's share of the money goes to the player who lost with the 2nd best hand as well as the player who won with the best hand. Almost always everyone else at the table gets a share of the prize for being dealt into the hand and in some cases everyone in the cardroom gets a sliver of the prize money.

It is not uncommon for the house to take a small percentage for "administration fees" or whatever. However, here is where it gets interesting with regard to BetOnline, Sportsbetting.ag, Tigergaming, collectively the Chico Poker Network.

They took a double digit admin fee out of a near record $1,200,000 Bad Beat Jackpot! Not only this, but they raised the fee while the bad beat was accumulating (near the 1mm mark) from 12.5% to 15%. In the end, they netted nearly $190,000 in administration fees when the jackpot hit. We made a chart so you can see what normal fees are in comparison:

This is far from the industry norm! It is also not a practice we agree with. It looks suspiciously like padding their own pockets at the expense of their clients and poker players once the bad beat grew to a massive size. The 2.5% increase in fees from 12.5% to 15% (which was already the highest fees in the industry) effectively took $30,000 out of the pockets of players.

No beuno! Help us spread this story and see if we can get them to adopt a more reasonable policy moving forward.
