Default chinese domain name purchase scam

Be advised that domain name scams are on the rise again.

One of the scams is when you will receive an email claiming to be in charge of a country's top level TLD and how they caught someone trying to register a name with a different top level then the one(s) you own.

They try to present the emails as if they are doing you this huge favor and how they stopped someone from registering yur brand.

The emails often start in a similar manner as
We are China’s internet domain services company and last week, we received an application from a Chinese company that has requested “[NAME OF U.S. COMPANY”] as their internet name and China (CN) domain name. But after checking into it, we learned that this name conflicts with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it’s necessary to send email to you and confirm whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China and to confirm that you authorized this domain registration Please respond soonest.

Here is a similar but modified example:
(It's very urgent, please transfer this email to your CEO. If this email affects you, we are very sorry, please ignore this email. Thanks)

We are a Network Service Company which is the domain name registration center in China.
We received an application from Hua Hai Ltd on June 1, 2020. They want to register " " as their Internet Keyword and " yourdomain .cn "、" yourdomain " 、" yourdomain "、" yourdomain " domain names, they are in China domain names. But after checking it, we find " yourdomain " conflicts with your company. In order to deal with this matter better, so we send you email and confirm whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China or not?

The second one was funny it had me laughing for seconds and seconds but the humor was short lived since I know that some folks fall for this.

Now there are times and situations or instances where you "may" want to purchase a few TLD's for a brand you plan on building. But that should be a personal decision you make and not be driven by such emails.

As a side note if these kinds of emails or this thread makes you consider buying the additional TLD's to protect you brand more, you should do so only if it is a logical course of business for you and not just because some scammer contacts you cause he is "doing you a favor"

These disgraceful scammers will stop at nothing and will use various methods (that buying iTunes cards telephone call scam in order to pay off a so-called government bill or debt is really ridiculous and their have been people who have fallen for that trick) to steal whatever they can from their unsuspecting victims. Shameful.
