Default Columnist criticizes Canada's online gambling stance

Well here's something you don't hear often. Someone praising the U.S. Government's stance on online gambling. Vancouver Sun columnist David Baines says the U.S. is doing the right thing by cracking down on "unlicensed online gambling" while his home country of Canada "prefers just to look the other way."

This is the tale of two countries plagued by the same problem. One is bold and aggressive in dealing with it. The other is so timid and afraid that it doesn't even try.

The problem is online gambling. Offshore gambling businesses -which are not licensed by any recognized authority in Canada or the United States -have been beaming into those countries via the Internet and offering betting services of all types.

Because these providers are unregulated, we cannot be sure if the principals are of good character, whether the games are fair, or whether the enterprise is being used for nefarious purposes, such as money laundering.

I believe his stance was that kudos to the US Government for finally working towards legalization of online gambling.(Poker for now). I believe he has issue with all the gambling money leaving the country instead of Governments taking a step towards legalization and taxation.

You know what? He makes a valid point. After seeing this BetUS debacle and seeing how a lot of other shady operations conduct themselves offshore I firmly believe there are far more BAD offshore companies who are screwing players and affiliates in this industry than there are good. In fact, I would say 3 out of every 4 I would not trust. It's a shame because thsoe bad apples give the rest a bad reputation by association. I know this post won't be popular but it's my feeling on this industry as a whole.

That's why we are only promoting a few brands now and won't be adding anymore anytime soon. All the ones we currently promote have treated us honest, have always paid and don't stiff players. Unfortunately, there are too many operations that do stiff players and/or affiliates and simply get away with it because they operate offshore and think they are teflon.

I know this. If some of these affiliate programs and books/casinos operated like this from the states they would be brought into court on class action lawsuits and/or fraud charges for the way they operate. Can you imagine a vegas sportsbook telling a player we ain't paying you even though we accepted the bet because we consider you a "professional"? Can you imagine Amazon.com getting away with fudging the stats on their affiliate program to screw affiliates?

This Canadian columnist is right in that regard. I do think this industry should be regulated and taxed not only because we should have the right to do what we want with our money but also to shutdown the shady offshore sportsbooks and casinos thart RIP OFF affiliates and players and get away with it.
