As the dust settles on Auroras Encore’s 66-1 Grand National victory, bookmaker Coral say betting interest in the world’s most famous steeplechase reached an all-time high, with the switch from BBC to Channel 4 and negative coverage of the race from some quarters not turning the British public off their traditional once a year flutter.

“Now the dust has settled on the National, it’s clear both the number of bets taken and the amount of money staked was up from 2012, which shows just how important the race is both to the sport and bookmakers,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“It also proves that despite the negative coverage of recent runnings, the Grand National retains its place in the hearts of the British public, as they came out in their millions to enjoy a flutter, while the excellent work by Channel 4 to promote their coverage ensured a seamless switch from the BBC,” added Stevens.

“Best of all, all 40 runners and riders returned home safely, which should give all involved the confidence going forward to make the day even bigger and better, and we at Coral will certainly look to play our part in promoting what is by far the biggest betting event of the year,” said Stevens.

The winner is now set to run in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr, for which the sponsor make him the 10-1 second favourite.

“The icing on the cake for us is that Auroras Encore looks set to run at Ayr, which will make Coral Scottish Grand National day even more exciting. The race was the fifth biggest by turnover in Coral shops in 2012, and with Auroras Encore looking to emulate the mighty Red Rum by completing the National double, we would expect huge interest in the race once again,” concluded Stevens.
