Have you decided on a beach place yet? I still think Puerto Viejo would be nice. It's not comercialized as much as Jaco.

    Shaun,
You know I don't know. The flood was about a month or so ago, and I haven't heard anything about it. It's not a "hot" political issue so I don't think it was that bad. I haven't been there since.

I understand that Jack goes there a lot, and even has a house there. Maybe he knows.

I've found a couple of potential places down that way and one a bit further out at Cahuita. Maybe Jack is looking for a tenant for a while...

Part of the problem is that Australians only get 30 days and have to apply for extensions and add to that you need proof you are leaving the country before you arrive, it makes it difficult. Just working out the logistics and perhaps a few days in San Jose to work out the extension could be worthwhile. Also considering ducking over to Panama for a couple of months and then coming back for a month if I don't do the extension thing. I guess there are worse hassles to sort out.

Adrian, will definitely be in contact regardless of what happens and even if I don't make it in early December for the gathering an informal meal or drinks with a few of you would be great.

Very cool Jack I would likely attend. I prefer the smaller conferences seem to get more done.

The weather is huge a huge plus!

I've wondered why there has not been one in CR, it only makes sense as some operators are there and its relatively cheap for US based affs.
Count me in if it happens.

It would be very interesting to have a report from someone going down there on the type of operations that 60% of the casinos on the net are running... including most of the rogue sites and crooks. I read in a forum post that you would not want to be alone in the day time to some of their seedy offices.

Wow.. what bleak perspective. When I read your post I felt the need to share my experiences with living in Costa Rica and my perception of the gaming industry.

That's not what I see. I've been here for the past 12 years. I originally graduated at UF ain Mechanical Engineering. I worked in Florida for a few years and then came to Costa Rica to study medicine. When in med school here I had to work so I started with web portals. When I finally graduated finally got my license I decided to continue with being a gaming webmaster. It was much more time and afforded me more time with my son.

Trust me, I would not having anything to do with the online gaming community if it was as seedy as you mentioned. There's tons of quality, ethical professionals in Costa Rica dedicated to providing a quality and fair gaming experience.

Just like in life, you hear more about the bad than the good. It's not all roses here, but in context of having a convention for the gaming industry it would be a great place.

    1. Never been there but know of some crooks who hide out there. Would like to have the money stolen to make the trip though. The country is beautiful to vacation at and the LAPPT is also there.
    2. Stat is on internet, 200+ companies (as seen on TV - CBS) so number may have changed since then. They are all over the net vs other locations.
    3. AGD or Casinomeister, can't remember but Casinomeister had a statement not recommending any casino from costa rica (
must have taken it down) and I read a forum post of someone from CAP who went down to costa rica to see one of the offices and did not have anything nice to say except to say very seedy operators.

I am not saying ALL are crooks, just a few bad apples that all seem to congregate in that part of the world. Read the news, Costa Rica has money laundering issues, online gaming issues else why would they be in the news.

A convention there would do wonders to clear any misgivings a lot of affiliates at GPWA are venting over not getting paid... namely, getting paid!

Glad to here from one who shares their experience living there. Hope to meet you some day!

With Costa Rica leading the way for online operators, I hope the seedy ones are rooted out by those who conduct themselves in a professional and ethical way.

Guess I met my fair share of the seedy operators and associated seedy hosting operators such as Hostarica than the reputable ones over the last 10 years but i do not loose hope.

Name a country that has no money laundering or crooks please, I will move tomorrow. Name a country not having any issues. Of course if one concentrates on negatives, is easy to find. Either way, maybe this will help change some mind sets.

PS. Curious to note right now on top of Casinomeister forum is doyles casino. Guess where they from ?

Okay my trun to post about living in Costa Rica i think i am pretty good authority to post after living in CR for about 2 years.

Firstly yes a couple of rouge casino are based in CR but guess what same in Malta same in Gib shall i continue....

The country is a 3rd world country but it rapidly shaking that image off, some of the biggest companies are based on CR such as HP, Dell and many others. The country is pretty safe of course some areas are no go but I understand Canada also has a number of areas that are heavly populated by crack heads ect.

The infastructure i CR is great every shop possible, great banking ect ect, I loved CR the main reasonI left was due to be closer to family as we just had a second child and also a move to a new company to set up a new affiliate program.

I would say do not judge until you have been.

    Regards

    Shaun

I will not be attending the event in Costa Rica due to work committments in the UK. However after living in Costa Rica for over five years I can share a few tips with you.

The country itself is one of the best countries I lived in and made a fantastic group of friends (Gringos and Ticos). However what made me finally return to my mother land was the third world politics and corruption. This kind of got to me a bit as the laws in Costa Rica support the criminal with limited support to the actual victims of the crime.

However having said that the country, the lifestyle and the general people were great and I loved every bit about my life in Costa Rica!

The main tip about living a peaceful life in Costa Rica is to live lowkey. As long as you do this as well as take care who you deal with you would love it.

    Some costa rican english speaking newspapers;

http://www.amcostarica.com (an online blog which has great information)
http://www.ticotimes.net (an on and offine newspaper)

Things to checkout while in Costa Rica

    1) The del rey (sleasy downtown place for the guys to go to)
    2) Tamarindo (Pacific beachtown)
    3) Tabacon Hot Springs (very peaceful)
    4) Jungle Tour
    5) Jaco (sleasy beach town close by San Jose)
    6) Canopy Tour
    7) Enjoying a beer in the mountains

    Hope this helps and enjoy,

Money laundering in Costa Rica is mostly a red herring. More money is laundered in New York and in London than in the rest of the world combined, but the UK and US governments like to point the finger at smaller countries so as to get the eyes off of themselves. One thing is certain: It is 10x easier to open a bank account in Miami than it is in Costa Rica, and the CR banking system does not make it easy to launder ill gotten gains -- especially now. Everything has to be justified and proven regarding source of funds.

With that off my chest, I would certainly attend the conference as an affiliate, representing Wheretobet.com. Count me in and keep me posted regarding the details.

I am absolutely interested, I LOVE Costa Rica! It will only depend on the exact dates as I have a major project going live right around that same time. Will it be in San Jose or a beach town?

    Keep up the good work!
