Getty Images is dropping the watermark for the bulk of its collection, in exchange for an open-embed program that will let users drop in any image they want, as long as the service gets to append a footer at the bottom of the picture with a credit and link to the licensing page.
The proviso being it's an embedded image they can turn off, change or add advertising too at any time.

Agree with that Simmo, don't think it will be taken up by a lot of the big established affiliate operations for that reason but for new starters or smaller operations on a very small budget its a trade off that they may feel is worthwhile.

Interesting that getty are so radically altering their business model. After seeing their pictures ripped of online for so long it seems a sensible move but we'll see how many follow suit.

Definitely interesting, but probably not something I'd use myself these days.

Not that I would use it, but where does it say advertising? From what I can see, it's simply credits.

Or you jumping to worse case scenario

The new money comes because, once the images are embedded, Getty has much more control over the images...the company can use embeds to plant ads or collect user information. "We've certainly thought about it, whether it's data or it's advertising," Peters says

It sounds good, but I'd rather pay for the image, rather than get it for free in return for a link. Besides that, it just wouldn't look very professional.

Why would anyone want to use images, especially within their own advertising, or mastheads on their sites, that some other party can later add avertsining to?

And with this method, is there a guarantee that porn ads will not be added to an image of say the grand canyon? And what about the folks who use an image for their local girl scout troop or car dealership? Those images might carry gambling advertising, or ads for competitors next month.

What about graphic artsts and designers using images they think are free, but later suddenly carry ads for others?

I see this as being very very messy later on down the road.

I do see an opportunity for software developers to come up with programs that can remove the ability for Getty to "have control" over the image.

When someone buys n istockphoto picture does that mean that her image won't come up in google advance image as free to use and share? If I buy a picture do I have the right to put my logo on it?

edgar, that has to do with what licensing you are agreeing to when you make the purchase.
