I didn't know where to post this.
Please move it to the proper area?
Sorry for the trouble.

My wife, Helen, JUST emailed this to me....read it and let your family, ESPECIALLY your CHILDREN know of this!!!

I knew about the red light on cars, but not the #77.
It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend.
An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on.
Lauren's parents have 4 children (high school and college age) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc.

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called #77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.
One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground.
The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the #77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car.

Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call #77 like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this
little bit of wonderful information.

Speaking to a service representative at **Bell** Mobility confirmed that #77 was a direct link to OPP Dispatch. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about #77.

My wife, Helen, JUST emailed this to me...
Am I to worry about what my WIFE sends me?

Lanidar,

Randy did not mean anything by his statement, but was just pointing out that these types of forwarded emails make the rounds every so often.

I too see many of these emails, and I usually also receive them from close family members as well.

I will however, now move this to a more appropriate thread....and although the number to dial may or may not be correct or the statement concerning the actual situation may or may not be false, reading this type of email occasionally makes one think, and if it saves ONE life, or keeps one person safe, it's all worth it in the end.

Cool site, there, Randy!

My only concern with this story is the accuracy of the *677 number. ;)

On this piece, I liked the follow-through facts about this story, which does have some merit, particularly this -

In 1996 Governor Pataki of New York issued an executive order to prevent unmarked state police cars from stopping motorists for routine traffic violations, citing "a growing number of cases around the country in which criminals trap their victims by posing as police officers." If he's worried about it, you should be too.

---

I had an unmarked car follow me around one day when I was 24(?) - I finally pulled over in front of a store with a full plate glass window and confronted him - and it was only then that I saw it was a cop. I ripped him a new one, and he apologized.

BUT, I had this "fake cop" thing happen to a close friend of mine in California in the mid-80's. She fortunately was suspicious enough to not get in his car with him, but he got all her personal info before leaving, and freaked her out for a while.

I phoned my local police department.
The correct phone number is #77
I corrected this post AND all the others I have made.
Thanks for you help. :D

The National Crime Prevention Council has a large selection of resources and information regarding crime prevention and personal safety.

The Crime Beat Gazzette is another good resource.

Crime is a serious problem in our society, and becomes even more serious when it's someone we love who's been victimized. I encourage everyone to be aware of basic personal safety issues like not pulling over for an unmarked police care unless you're in a safe, public, and well-lit area. I think basic self defense and privacy issues are important too. I'm going to recommend How to Be Invisible for people interested in privacy issues, and Frank Abagnale's Site is a source of good information about identity theft and fraud. (Mr. Abagnale was the subject of a movie called Catch me if You Can. It was based on Abagnale's true story.)

LANIDAR, where are you located parchance?

I'm a little late on the uptake on this one, but in Maryland, It is in fact #77. It dials directly to the State Police dispatcher. I thought this was a nationwide thing, and didn't know that some states do not advertise this.

In Maryland, on all major highways, and also on our local "beltway" we see these signs. I think has them as well.
