I personally give money to some charities I know, I avoid giving can food or used clothes.
I've read that it was the wrong way to help with those type, just let the trusted charities of your choosing to do the right things like buying whole sale of medicine, food and clothes.

Interesting thread and very important topic. I would like to speak about organizations like Gamcare, Gambleaware or RGC which purpose is to educate people to play safe and help them to resolve their gambling problems. Almost all of us have their logos on our websites, we warn the visitors to play responsibly and redirect them to the mentioned websites for the help and advice, so I would like to know: do you donate or feel obligation to help these kind of charities?

    Regards.

I sponsor a couple of kids in Africa to go to school and give then the basic necessities. I also contribute to worthwhile causes as and when they appear and merit some extra help. It's good to give a little back when you can.

I donate to kids with cancer because I don't think little kids should have to go through that. It breaks my heart. At least they will get to have a decent life before the inevitable if it occurs.

In regards to your book recommendation, I don't believe true altruism exists. Theoretical altruism, maybe. Donating could be seen as altruism, but it still makes you feel good/like a better person for doing so, so then it's not by definition an altruistic action because you're getting that "good feeling" in return for what you've done. Just my opinion.
