Question Do you have life insurance?

Buying life insurance is something we all hope will prove to be a really bad investment. Something we purchase with the hope it will never actually be used. But providing family members with financial resources in the event of the unthinkable is a good thing, and something that has been on my mind this past week. So for this week's poll I'd like to encourage folks to think about whether they have the right amount of insurance given their responsibilities to others. Many affiliates are self-employed, and so don't have the benefit of a company providing life insurance for them.

I have purchased life insurance through my super. It's something I've had since I started working when I was 15 anyway, but in the past year after some unexpected events I've upgraded it. I don't have any dependents of my own, but if something did happen to me at least I'd know that both my siblings would have enough money to pay off all their debts and look after my parents when they can't look after themselves anymore.

I do yes but due to me having a major heart attack at a very younge age and just surviving the amount i get would be enough to cover a funeral and one or 2 small items as the insurance company wanted me to pay 3 X as much as someone who was not inflcited .. i hate the idea but its something

I never properly understood what is the (life) insurance good for. I think to have a lot of money is better.

I generally hate insurances. Insurance is a pretty evil industry. They're playing on people's insecurities all the time - what if this, what if that?

I think if you have enough money to leave people a good sum in your will then you don't need it, but I can see the point at a certain income level.

I don't have any at this time as I do not have any dependents. That could change though.

It would be interesting to take this poll one step further and see how a single person or a family with dependents would stack up.

The older you get the harder it will be to find a policy cheap, if you're still young you can lock in a low rate, something to consider.

Life insurance is for the young to middle-aged.
The older you get - the less likely it is that you need life insurance.

Life insurance is useless to the life that is insured (you are dead) ...

But if you have dependents (partner / kids) and outstanding debt (house mortgage) then many people like the peace of mind that these dependents are taken care of financially. That's understandable - but it's only for a defined period of time of your life.

Once the kids are 20+, once the mortgage is paid off, then life insurance is pretty much pointless for quality of life.
It's hard to understand why you still need life insurance at 50+ years of age once you are mortgage free.

Yes, it is a middle class product. But as you said, it is "playing on people's insecurities". It sucks out the resources from the people and it makes them more and more risk aversive, which itself creates a huge systemic risk for their whole life and then even for the society.

Because we have to risk sometimes. Like going for revenue share is a huge risk with a big bankroll. Buying cryptocurrencies in early stages is also extreme risk taking. Only those who take those risks could make it away from the middle class trap.

I have a funny story. I always argue about insurance with typical middle class members, like my mother-in-law.

Once I was sitting at her home, eating food she prepared and there was some letter from her insurance company: reminder to pay the insurance for the windshield, which is of course by orders of magnitude bigger nonsense than life insurance (small risk, high premium). She asked me (knowing the reply, so just teasing me) whether I have this windshield insurance. I made her quite a long speech how useless this **** is, how it is playing on people's insecurities, how even signing the papers and paying it cost me more in terms of value of my time than the new windshield and so on.

To make the story short, I broke the windshield very soon after. And from that time I keep breaking it about twice a year. It is not just stones. I was hit by falling branch from tree. My trunk opened while driving. One windshield cracked because of temperature. It started to happen with both my cars and even with other cars I am driving.

I am a good target for laughter from that time, because I am busy, so it is usually the father-in-law who goes with the cars to repair shop.
