Question Do you participate in online meetings with video on or off?

In the last few years the use of online meeting platforms like Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and Skype has exploded.

For this week's poll I ask whether you keep video on or off during such meetings.

Besides voting the the poll, I invite you to share what platforms you use, how often you use them, what you think of them, how much you like or dislike the video aspect, and why.

Personally, I use Zoom most often, and Microsoft Teams occasionally. And I typically average 4-5 such meetings a week. I virtually always participate with video on, and do appreciate seeing the folks I am meeting with. But also especially value the video when sharing screens, which I find is often very helpful.

Although not for meetings, I also use WhatsApp for one-on-one video calls, especially when traveling.

The answer for me is that it depends on the audience.

For simple internal conversations with just one other person it's usually video off through Skype. For bigger meetings/external conversations it's usually video on through Skype, Zoom or Meet, or whatever is prescribed if it's an invite from a 3rd party.

For simple text chats Skype tends to be the one I use most, then WhatsApp.

It depends, currently I do not have a webcam for my desktop. So clearly those meeting are without video. If I am on my laptop I will use video for Zoom Teams and Skype.

On my phone I don't use video for Whats App or Skype.

I rarely ever use video whenever I talk to anyone. I really don't see any need for it, except for possibly if it's an emergency or something that's of high importance that must be spoken about at length.

It really all depends on whatever the situation at hand is and how it's supposed to be handled and approached.

If I need to turn on the video then of course I turn it on, but if there is an option not to turn it on or it is simply not important then why?

I usually keep my video off during meetings. I avoid turning on my camera as much as I can, but there are some occasions that merit seeing people face to face.

    Yes, agreed!

I also prefer keeping the camera on. It gives you the extra body language while having a meeting.

I always have the video on for meetings. Worst is always adjusting light in the room depending on the type of day ... the camera is not always so kind. LOL

Yeah, I do use my camera in video meetings. I think it helps make the conversation feel more natural, like we're really connecting. Plus, seeing each other's reactions can make things clearer and avoid any misunderstandings.

Yeah, I’m all for keeping the cam off most times during online meetings. Saves me from worrying about bedhead and PJ vibes. But for those important ones or team meetups where faces matter, I’ll switch it on. It's a balance between chill and pro.
