Does google treat text on a page the same for upper and lower case words?
Eg: would "this is some text" and "THIS IS SOME TEXT" be seen as the same?

I believe that they treat upper and lower case the same.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear, thanks :D
According to me if we search any thing either in small letters or in Capital letters or in small and capital mix letters then it will show the same results.search engine treat it same. And if we search by writing the words in bold or italic or in any other style then it will show the same results.
Yes, google does not look at the casing or font for search engine ranking placement otherwise you would see everybody using uppercase and bold font.
You can verify this quickly by doing a few searches to see if the results are different.
I thought that font-weight did have an effect, although it is proportional. Eg: In a page where everything is bold, each word is treated the same. But a page with 1000 words and 1 bolded would treat the bolded word as more relevent to the page's subject matter.
That was my understanding anyway.
If you bold a word to highlight keywords then this adds relevance to that keyword on that page.
Content capitalization shouldn't matter from the search engine's point of view but this might have an effect on the user. It seems that they are treated the same and this has been mentioned. It doesn't seem there is a conclusive answer but discussions point that the answer is no difference:
