Does the title and meta description affect CTR?

Simple question. According to you, can an interesting catchy meta title beat the number of clicks of a page ranking higher?
Or does the ranking position always reflect plus or minus the number of clicks and bailing out with descriptions won't do anything and you just have to attack higher positions :)

My opinion
It may have some significance, however not much.
However, even if it doesn't matter too much, and it doesn't cost much effort, why not try to make the meta descriptions encourage clicks?

Just think how you search yourself. You don't always click the top results if there is a page with a title that fits your query better below those positions.

Of course the higher you are the more clicks you will get but the title makes a big difference. This is especially true while google is ranking newspapers and sites with tons of links in the top spots but their titles will rarely reflect the specific query. I would argue it is more important now than ever.

I read it can influence plenty. Just think of this, is casino x a scam? How many people will click that result if you are a real player and concerned.

Yes, I believe it does have an impact. A title and description that align with the user's search and promise to provide the answers they're looking for will always be appealing. Will it beat higher-ranked pages? Maybe not, but that doesn't mean it can't achieve good or even better results.

I believe it matters yes. We change the homepage title and meta description every week to match the upcoming golf tournaments, makes it much more relevant than a generic message in my view.

Just out of curiosity, after how long does Google update your meta title and description?
If you change it so often I suspect it's pretty fast.
Where do you change in Rank Match or some plugin?

I'd say it depends. First you'll have to be crawled, and crawl frequency varies across sites. Then the algorithm has to decide what to do about the change. There is no guarantee it would see the change favorably. Then it has to filter the change out. Across multiple data centers and other areas of the algorithm.

Anyone's experience of how long will be just that..their experience, depending on the vagaries of their site. But ofc you might get some rough ideas.

I'd suggest exercise caution here, or test it with an unimportant page and see what happens first. It's generally accepted (or was) that changing titles is potentially dangerous. Title is (or was, lots of changes recently) one of the most important elements of a page. The algorithm may not 'like' changes, especially not regular ones. Golfbettingsystems' experience (assuming it's positive) may be different (because it's an authoritative golf betting site) than someone elses might be with theirs.

In theory, changing desc not so important, G ignores often enough anyway and chooses what to show. But...even if they do change, the actual impact of the description (for underlying SEO) is unknown.

There are several plugins that enable this. Don't know (don't use it), but I suspect Rankmath (and Yoast) are equally usable for this purpose.

Bottom line...it's probably still wise to carefully craft title and description and avoid changes. Until you've proved it doesn't hurt to change.

PS And note my comment on recent algorithm changes. Every one of my comments above could theoretically be invalid now. Or become invalid at any point.

I entered many of the meta titles on the fly, without a plan, as I wanted to return to them later in the future.

It appears that the best option will be to improve the titles in a thoughtful way, so as not to do it once again in the near future.

As for plugins, I just use Rank Match and Google pulls the titles from the plugin. Descriptions, on the other hand, practically never, it always gets them from the content.
However, I suspect that the title is much more important.

As I searched for articles on the subject, I found blogs in which it was written that a good description will give much more clicks position 5 than 1 for example. However, checking the ranking on X keywords in gambling, it seems to me that this claim is too optimistic.

It’s usually updated within 24 hours on google search, often sooner and rarely much later - we use the Yoast plugin to make the changes.

I'm not good with titles and have had to come to terms with that. However, I've found it helpful to use AI to generate 10-20 title ideas based on a given description. Additionally, I browse forums to incorporate phrases and words used by my target audience.

Imo it would make a difference around the top positions, so an accurate title in line with the actual search intent can potentially increase your CTR and eventually give you a better position.

That said, I believe one main thing you'd need to consider here is search intent. A little while ago I was wondering whether using emojis in titles would help and after some time of trying it / testing / comparing - I did not find any significant difference.

Yes, I’ve seen this although in some cases I think what google chooses is far worse. They can use anchor texts, H tag content etc, sometimes which may be formatted differently to a regular title - seeing a search result all in lower case for instance is a real negative for me, but it happens due to google overwriting.
