Default Dutch gambling regulator announces crackdown on affiliate marketers

As the Netherlands prepares for the launch of online gambling, regulatory body Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) announced on Friday that it is cracking down on affiliate marketers who promote online gambling sites targeting Dutch customers in defiance of the current legal situation, stating that sites "offering online gambling and advertising for it is prohibited under current legislation."

    From the KSA:

    Illegal
The Ksa examined 44 websites. These were examined on the basis of our own observation and external reports. Advertising for online gambling was found on 26 websites. Twenty sites immediately stopped this after the Ksa drew their attention to their illegal behavior. Three websites did this only after there was a threat of imposing a penalty. The investigation is still ongoing at the other three websites

    Action
It is the second time that the Ksa is conducting research into this form of affiliate marketing. During a promotion in 2016/2017 , this led to seventeen websites ceasing to advertise online gambling.

    To protect
Protecting consumers is an important objective of the Ksa. Participants in games of chance from providers without a license are not assured of a fair game. Nor is it possible to monitor the participation of vulnerable groups, such as young people. The market for online gambling is likely to open on January 1, 2021. Consumers can then go to providers with a license that the Ksa supervises.
