Default Entain to exit unregulated markets by end of 2023

Calling it a "clear strategy for sustainability, growth and innovation," Entain announced toiday that by the end of 2023, "100% of the Group’s revenue would come from markets that are nationally regulated."

Entain will accelerate this process by exiting its few remaining markets where there is "no clear path to market liberalisation via domestic regulation" and will remain in only a small number of markets where it expects changes in regulation will enable it to obtain domestic licenses in due course.

    From the press release:

    Barry Gibson, Entain’s Chair, commented:

“As part of the profound and far-reaching transformation programme that Entain has undergone in the last few years, we took the decision in 2020 to only operate in nationally regulated markets. Today’s announcement is therefore a continuation of that strategy, and should be taken as a clear demonstration of Entain’s commitment to the highest standards of corporate responsibility, governance, sustainability, and player safety. We stated at the outset that we would exit any market that wasn’t able to regulate at sufficient pace or to the right standards, and we have acted decisively to do so. We are proud to be leading our industry as the only global operator taking this approach of solely operating in markets where there is domestic licensing.”

Yesterday they confirmed exit of Argentina and Bolivia from LatAm. Other countries were also announced: Iceland, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Slovenia.

Although for now only customers from partypoker were informed, we consider all brands from Entain to withdraw from such markets soon.

Thank you very much for your comments. Just to let you know, Argentina has a tricky regulation... since they have the "province" license (PBA) and the "federal" license (CABA, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires).

So technically, they could operate in Argentina legally but they would need to ask for TWO different licenses in order to operate in the whole territoty.

    Thanks for your answer

Can you explain a lil, please, regarding the issue of 2 licenses and why they were divided?

    Hi,

It depends on the government. Argentina can apply "regional laws" in every province, that's why you could find different licenses like "Province of Buenos Aires" (PBA) or "Province of Mendoza" at the same time they hace a different federal license, the one called "CABA" (it stands for Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires).

I was told it is because the provinces and the general government could be from different parties (right vs left parties) and probably they dont agree in the way they offer their licenses to potential bookmakers/casinos.

Furthermore, the bookmaker/casino needs to have a collaboration with a local casino or a local gambling company... while the government limit the number of licenses per year.

To sum up, it is a headache for affiliates

It's similar in Spain, National License (DGOJ) and then Sub-national regions have extra licensing restrictions.
ie. Andalusia, Madrid, Valencia, Galicia and Catalonia all introduced new gambling laws this year.

The Spanish law is only applicable for based casinos/sportsbook.

Online gambling is ruled by the exact same rules in all over the country.

I cannot understand how anyone can give Entain traffic at all. As soon as you give them a bit more players, they limit the commission or don't pay it at all. the topic has been checked many times and does not only concern me. If you can redirect this traffic anywhere else then do so as soon as possible. Every click directed to them is your loss.
