Default eSports betting at Pinnacle soars by 127%

As posted on Twitter (see below), bookmaker Pinnacle reported that its year-over-year bet count for eSports is up 127%, including a 403% increase in live betting.

The folks at eSportsBettingReport.com did a nice job of breaking down the numbers (read it here: http://tinyurl.com/hxwprek) including this nugget:

Eilers & Krejcik Gaming estimate that cash betting on esports could grow to as much as $16.4 billion in 2020. Even its bear case scenario expects total bets of almost $7 billion. The trend is crystal clear. Alongside almost all other esports-related businesses, esports betting is a rapid growth industry.
Let's hear it GPWA members, did you place more of an emphasis on eSports in 2016? Do you plan to do so in 2017?

In answer to the OP - No we did not "focus on e-sports" .. and No we will not in 2017 either.

Triple digit growth is easy to do from a very low base number

It's selective use of numbers - we see triple digit growth - we see grandiose projections of billions in future years.
But no-one wants to state the facts of current totals and how it's a such a tiny fraction of traditional sports betting.

I looked into eSports a little but have also decided not to do anything in the marketplace any time soon.

Hundreds of percent growth means nothing without some revenue/profit figures, so the article is of little use and won't be enticing anyone to join them unless they have other info.

Totally agree. And when/if it does become big business, I expect it'll be niche companies that are dedicated to e-sports betting that are the ones to capitalise and grow quickly.

My gut feeling tells me that eSports is extremely vulnerable to manipulation. There was quite a big manipulation scandal in South Korea one or two years ago. If more cases like this pop up then regulators might be quick to shut down betting on eSports. Let's see how it develops.

Yes, yes that's it. Keep competition out of the esports niche. I haven't made enough money yet.

A lot is slated to happen in the arena of eSports in 2017. In this year, companies will take things beyond simple marketing: They would create dedicated strategies and manage to retain full control of their revenue models.

Would you do a site about Handball betting? Probably not, there isn't enough in it. eSports is tiny compared to most other markets, payout limits are low and, as pointed out already, it is hugely vulnerable to fraud.

Don't get me wrong it is going to become more popular but there are plenty of more valuable markets to target first in my book.
