    Default Experiences from market regulation?

    Hi,
I'm a sportsbetting affiliate who aim for the Swedish market and have established some sites with active players for a few years. As I understand, Sweden might soon implement a licensing system to comply with EU law, as many other countries such as Denmark and UK have done lately.

My question is: How did these regulations and changes affect you as an affiliate? Did you loose a big part of your player base during the transition?

Compliance with any new regulations is tough for any operators so yes you potentially will lose players especially if the casinos dont abide by the new laws best to just then support casinos who can legitimately operate in these markets and are fully regulated for best results

Typically what happens is new regulations are put in place alongside a horrendous surtax that makes the market uneconomic for many bookmakers and casinos.

This results in several licensed and reputable programs leaving the jurisdiction (complete loss of players at those outfits).

For those programs that stay in the jurisdiction profits will drop in accordance with the amount of special license tax that is taken off the top.

The end result is usually a small licensed market that doesn't make any money, and a grey market of bookmakers and casinos that are not licensed (or taxed) in the jurisdiction but accept them anyway so can offer better odds and player bonuses.

    ---------------------------------------

The one exception to this seems to be the UK, their POCT license seems to have worked well.

Probably because the take is only 15% of net-revenue which is manageable, and also because has the muscle to enforce the licensing restrictions, and the UK has managed to get the e-wallets to get on board and restrict UK transactions to/from non-UK licensed merchants.

As from our experience in Greece, a lot of big companies left from the market and new companies, small ones, came in order to take a percentage of it. The regulation in Greece is not permanent, so the things are not so stable although the 24 temporary licenses work properly for 4 years till now. Government announced they will give new permanent licenses in the next months and probably big players will come back.
