Facebook spammer hit with $711M fine

Have you heard about this very controversial facebook news recently?

A U.S. court has ordered a Las Vegas man to pay Facebook $711 million US in damages for spreading spam messages on the social networking site.
Sanford Wallace accessed Facebook members' accounts without their permission, and sent out fake messages and wall postings, the company said on its website on Friday.

Imagine the cause he made. I don't know if he will afford to pay the fine for the damages. If you ruin a successful company you may end up being looser as if you can turn them down with those acts. Well, that's deserves him.

That just shows the value they're putting on social networks. No way this guy generated $711M in revenue from his facebook spam.

After reading the article it seems that he lost a total of three cases, where he is fined from three different companies. He's bankrupt, and could face criminal charges. I'm surprised that they did not mention the programs he was spamming for.

It would be interesting to know more details on how he was attempting to generate revenue.

Amazing how they get to such figures etc..............

Is anyone here making any great headway or revenue from promoting in Facebook.

Do you think he's the guy behind the private messages saying "what were you doing in this pic?" with a link? Far too many people I know have fallen for that (no, not me!)

I also use to get a lot of spam saying you look great in this video or this video is made for you, somthing of that sort, in my facebook profile as well as in my inbox. I knew it was spam and never opened it. I also informed all my group members instantly that donot open these messages or click on the links.....

Wonder sometimes how can people reach to such a figure by just working on facebook. I signin my account daily and do my normal stuff.... whew !!! but this is something really weird... Does anyone here make atleast 10% of what the figure is ?

Honestly, I dont think this was about paying the fine. The 711M was meant more to set a precedent and essentially discourage spammers from trying this.

The message is clear - Spam and you will be caught, and the punishment will not simply be a slap on the wrist.

The chances of him having 711M, or even 1M - whether it be from revenues geenrated from spamming or not - is extremely low.

But, it got our attention, and I'm sure it got the attention of other potential spammers.

...on a side note, I just got a message from "a cute russian girl" that seems to want to meet me...hmm. lemme just click on this link and i'll get back to you guys...

I agree with you guys, spam is a pest in the social media world. One always has to use up time to wade through all that stuff. 711M is a bit harsh but hey, one has to make an example on how serious this is. Just thinking about my email folder without a spam filter makes me shiver.

Seems a little excessive and unreal to have to pay 711 million dollars. Even airlines when they make mistakes are fined less than this.

I received that message a while back and was too curious to not look. lol! I cant believe I fell for it.

Chances of this guy having that money to pay in fines is slim-to-none. They just took this guy and used him to make a point to future want-to-be-scammers. Whether that works or not has yet to be seen (or maybe impossible to even measure).

Shame on the spammer but $711 million wow! How did they come up with that figure? I think he deserves to be punished, but $711 sounds a little excessive. I doubt he has money like that.

Wow, they really made an example out of this guy, didn't they?

I haven't been involved with this but I've heard the "Hey I found this site and someone is saying bad things about you on it, you ought to sign up and stop them." converted well for these guys. I have contacts who have done this sort of thing, and no way they are doing THAT well.
