I remember that too. When I entered this industry they were plastered everywhere on Yahoo! and anywhere that accepts banners, albeit gambling related or not. It was a period when most operators make money, then spend it on parties and booze while 888 reinvested their profits towards marketing and advertising to build their brand - and ultimately dominated the market.
I recall talking to an affiliate manager from once about branding, and she just chuckled and said "we don't want branding.. we just want players." Well it's no wonder they never became the juggernaut like their competitor did with such shortsightedness.
