Forum Spam Issue (being resolved as we can)

Gee whiz, spammers need to be taught kindness and patience on the internet. There needs to be more penalizing at internet access companies who know some of their customers that use spam. Just send them warning emails, like "This is your first warning, if you spam gpwa.org again, we will report you to spamhaus."

May be if each new member stays "under moderation" by "X" time (the time enough to verify if can be a possible spammer)?

i know it would give more work to moderators, but it could help to solve? or not.... (is just an opinion)

AFAIK the forum (GPWA) isn't inundated daily with legitimate new member sign ups. I'm sure the handful of legit daily signups, wouldn't mind waiting a few hours to be approved. It's about containment and making it a pain in the ass for spammers. If it's too much hassle, they'll move onto a softer target

Admin CP -> Setting -> Options -> User Registration Options -> Moderate New Members -> Yes

I installed the google robot checkbox captcha thing a while back on VB and it cut down a lot of this tied with VBstopforumspam if that helps..

I would believe with that set, it wont prevent bots/people making spam accounts, BUT it will stop them posting

True,but i know how xrumer works,and how to stop it...gpwa is on the "green" list and this is why the bot always come back.
prevent the bot 1-2 Times and the problem is solved.

And no i never usethis tool in the www,but i know the interface.

I think that we should implement a system somewhere along the lines of what you have stated here. Does anyone else have any ideas similar to this please?

The vb stop forum spam is pretty strong, will not allow posts with a link un til user has X amount of posts, also uses a shared DB of names / IP of known spammers..

We have used stop forum spam for years, you would be shocked if you knew how many registrations are denied daily from that alone

Maybe, but this seems rather persistant and is actually putting me off from using the forums, I would think a number of other members would feel the same way.
