Default Gambler places record World Cup bet - and loses

A British gambler placed the biggest World Cup bet of all time on Germany to beat Spain in the World Cup semi-final - and lost.

The 417,000 wager - that's half a million Euros - was placed with William Hill's telephone betting service at odds of 10/11, meaning the punter would have walked off with just under 800,000 if Joachim Loew's men had prevailed.

    Wow. Speechless.

That's a lot of disposable income to see vanish in the matter of 90+ minutes.

Here's hoping my brethren defeat Spain in the final!

Even being the largest sport betting event in the world, that is way too much money to put up to chance. Crazy.

    William Hill is very happy.

Wish they were my affiliate. At a conservative 25% that would be over 100k euros...exchange to dollars...

    The poor guy..

    I feel for him..

I bet a sausage/bacon and egg mcmuffin from mcdonalds that germany would win, and I lost of course. Had to buy a guy in the office one. Wasn't happy about it. Not because of the money, but the principle. I actually wanted Germany to win the cup.

    Shame.

That's the spirit from a Germany Team supporter. Wonder if the amount do not really matter for the bettor, I bet he a millionaire to put that to a risk, and would not be worrying too much if it would be lost, as what had happened.

Ouch! That match was also the second time Germany let me down in the World Cup... fortunately I didn't have half the sum he did!

That had to be hot money.

Wouldn't a bet that large raise some red flags with regard to match fixing?
