• The festival features a total of 27 races including 14 chases, 12 hurdle races and 1 flat, or bumper, race.
• Cheltenham takes place every March and almost always coincides with St. Patrick's Day, making it a very popular choice with Irish visitors and Guinness drinkers!
• Cheltenham's official title is the National Hunt Meeting, going all the way back to 1860 when the National Hunt Chase was held at Market Harborough.
• The Betfred Gold Cup is the undoubted jewel in Cheltenham's crown and was first established in 1924.
• For the vast majority of its history Cheltenham has been a three-day long festival, however all this changed in 2005 with the introduction of a fourth day; meaning there would be one championship race on each day, with the Gold Cup taking place on the final day of the event.

• A Grade 1 National Hunt Chase open to horses aged five years or older, the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup is run on the New Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 3 miles and 2½ furlongs.
• Featuring around 22 fences, the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events with a roll of honour including famous names from Horse Racing history such as Arkle, Golden Miller and Kauto Star.
• The very first horse race known as the Cheltenham Gold Cup took place in July 1819 on Cleeve Hill, which overlooks the present venue. A horse named 'Spectre' romped to victory that day earning his owner 100 guineas in the process.
• Arkle dominated The Gold Cup during the mid 1960's, winning it three times on the trot from 1964 until 1966. In fact Arkle was so far ahead of the competition at this time that he was given an incredible starting price of 1/10 - making him the shortest priced winner in the history of the race.
• Long Run won last year's event and is the favourite to win this year's race.
