GoogleBot
I've noticed over the last week that Googlebot is visiting my site about 3 - 4 times a day and scanning different areas each time. I've not seen this level of activity before. In fact I was lucky if I saw google visit more than once a month until last week.
Is this a good thing for the site?

Did you managed any number of new backlinks pointing to your site recently?
It could be bot discovered new links and follow them???
Just one option I can imagine in a second.
-
No, the number of links has remained static for a while. I don't really do any link building.
-
Perhaps you did any "big" update to the content of your site?
I do some social posts at Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest about new page with fresh content that I have added to my site.
So all bots usually follow this social links frequently during the day and page is indexed within days or sooner.

It is good for your site. Bad for your bandwidth.
The latter is the reason why you have the option of manually limiting the number of Googlebot visits in Google Webmaster Tools.
-
From what I understand, the more often you update your site, the more often googlebot will visit it.
-
I noticed the same when I startet the site. In the beginning the bot visited the site not that much but I published new articles on a daily basis so the bot visits increased.
-
If you keep your site fresh then GoogleBot should visit regular. Keep and eye on GWT and see how this impacts search terms, if anything at all.
-
also you mentioned they are going to different pages - sometimes a bot will go through and initially spend a limited run through your site but come back if the content is seen as fresh or of quality or as others have mentioned has been getting social links - and if you have Webmaster Tools and have a sitemap they go back to look at more content - the spiders/bots can do small regular crawls
-
it could be also the reason that you update some areas of your page more often then others so the bot notices new content and so the visits increased. It took some months until I reached a continous level of visits of the bot on my page.

This is interesting because it can just mean that Google is expanding their crawlers and that is why they have been to your website more. It is also a possibility that your noticing them now as your software detecting them has improved. You wont know for sure but it is not a bad thing if you produce a lot of content you most likely want to have it indexed and seen by google as often as possible.
