Default Government Aide Admits Betting On General Election Date

According to the Guardian, Craig Williams - who is standing for election in Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr - placed a £100 bet on a July election just three days before Rishi Sunak named 4 July as the date.

    From the BBC:

A senior aide to Rishi Sunak has admitted that the Gambling Commission are making inquiries after he reportedly placed a bet on the date of the general election.

Tory candidate Craig Williams, who was the prime minister's Parliamentary Private Secretary in the last Parliament, said he would cooperate with the probe.

In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said: "I've been contacted by a journalist about Gambling Commission inquiries into one of my accounts and thought it best to be totally transparent.

"I put a flutter on the general election some weeks ago. This has resulted in some routine inquiries and I confirm I will fully cooperate with these.

"I don't want to be a distraction from the campaign, I should have thought through how it looked."

Beyond the fact that the amount of the bet is laughable, how foolish do you have to be to do something like this? They are trying to downplay the issue by claiming it’s a personal matter, but that wouldn’t be the case if it were an ordinary person involved.

Another investigation has been announced on the same topic, this time relating to the Conservative Party’s director of campaigning Tony Lee.

The story that keeps giving - the Metro Police say they have now been passed information from the Gambling Commission "alleging that five further officers have placed bets related to the timing of the election", which would make six in total.

    Statement to the BBC reads:

“We previously confirmed the arrest of a Met officer on Monday, 17 June for misconduct in public office in relation to bets placed on the timing of the General Election.

“The officer – a police constable from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command – is on restricted duties.

“It is still the case that only one officer is under criminal investigation.

“We have, however, been passed information from the Gambling Commission alleging that five further officers have placed bets related to the timing of the election.

“The officers are based on the Royalty and Specialist Command, the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command and the Central West Basic Command Unit. None of them work in a close protection role.

“Decisions on whether they will be subject to any restrictions will be taken in due course.”

What I find the most derisible is when a politician says something like "I made a silly mistake." No! A silly mistake is leaving your car keys on the hall table when you are rushing to take the kids to school. A silly mistake is nipping down to the shops for a pint of milk and discovering you forgot your wallet. Using insider information to place a bet on the date of a general election just to win £500 is an act of such unbelievably sociopathic arrogance that it could only be perpetrated by an MP (any MP not just Tories). There is zero chance they could have believed that they wouldn't get found out, which means they didn't care. It also means that the reason this country is in such a poor state today is 100% down to the laissez faire attitude of todays political class. I give a brief Overview of the UK General Election Betting Scandal as well as a look at Who's Who in the Tory Election Betting Scandal on my blog. My conclusion is no matter who (if any) replaces the current government, it simply won't matter. The UK is on a downward spiral and only all out insurrection can get us back on path.

Usually, when people describe something as a "silly mistake," they are trying to minimize their actions and avoid its consequences. I don't think the betting itself was considered a mistake by them, but rather doing it in a way that made them easily identifiable and penalized. Would it have been a "mistake" if it had never come to light? I don't think so.

Agree with this sentiment, I expect that those in question had assumed their betting activity was confidential and they could do what they pleased - clearly not the case.

Now if they'd walked into a bookmaker's shop and placed the bet in cash over the counter then it may be a different matter, as to how many of those transactions exist and who placed the bets I expect we'll never know.
