Lightbulb GPWA Database Server Upgrade and Planned Outage

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday 5 April 2011, at 8am EST we will be upgrading the SQL Server database server we use on the GPWA website. It is expected that this will result in disruption to some of the services offered on the GPWA website for a period of 15 to 30 minutes.

The forums do not use this database server, so the GPWA forums should operate normally during this upgrade process. The portions of the site that will be effected will include:

    1. The GPWA home page
    2. The directory of affiliate program sponsors
    3. The directory of portal sites
    4. The directory of GPWA members
    5. The archive of GPWA Times newsletters

The upgrade includes a migration from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. It also involves migration to a much more capable hardware platform. We are migrating from a single dual core processor to a new 6 core processor, from 6 gigabytes of memory to 64 gigabytes of memory, and from 10,000rpm disk drives to 15,000rpm disk drives.

The overall effect should be substantial performance increases in all of the portions of the website that use the new server. There should also be performance increases in other areas as well because some queuing issues could occur on the GPWA web server with our previous configuration even when the SQL server database was not being used.
