Thumbs up GPWA Member Ace Jones Wins ASOP

The second ASOP (Affiliate Series of Poker) Tournament took place Saturday and Sunday, June 9th and 10th at CAP Spring Break in the Bahamas. Thirty-six players were seated after qualifying in online tournaments hosted by sponsors Bet US and Wager Profits. The first day of play narrowed the field to six finalists, including the first ASOP winner, GPWA member Kosmonaut (Mikko Lang) who is second from the right in the group photo.

The Final Six at the End of Day One

To most of us, the first day of play looked like we expected, except that we were a bit amazed at how high and how fast the Professor was raising the blinds. Later, the true story was revealed. The Gaming Control Board in Nassau found out about the ASOP tournament. Evidently the prizes make it an illegal gaming activity under local law. So a game of cat and mouse was going on behind the scenes in an attempt to keep the gaming board at bay while the first day of tournament play was completed. Rumor has it that Saul Kerzner, the owner of the Atlantis, was personally contacted about the “illegal” activities taking place in his casino. The Atlantis was “forced” to cancel the final day of tournament play, to be held on Sunday, to comply with the orders of the gaming board.

    Atlantis Cancels the ASOP Tournament

The whereabouts for day two of the tournament activities were a closely guarded secret. After all, the authorities had to be kept at bay. Certainly the tournament could not be finished at the Atlantis if we valued our lives. So the six finalists, the Professor, and a few lucky souls like myself were whisked away in a limousine to an unknown destination we were told was only a stone’s throw away.

Inside the Limousine with the Massive Winner’s Check

Well, based on what we were told, we thought the limo ride would be a short one, but we were wrong. It went on, and on, and on. And we ended up watching at least a half-hour of the new Batman movie on the way. When at long last we arrived at the destination for the final table it all made sense. We were at a wonderful little facility with a beautiful view of the ocean called “A Stone's Throw Away.”

After nearly three hours of intensive play the winning hand was dealt. GPWA member Ace Jones (Dennis Brown) of Rounder’s Radio fame was the winner after going all-in with two pair (eights and twos) and an ace kicker.

GPWA Member Ace Jones Wins Final Hand

Before heading back to the Atlantis for an evening of partying, the Professor and a representative from sponsor Bet US presented Ace Jones with a check for $5,000. Of course, being affiliates in the gaming business, we were not surprised the check was dated July 10th rather than June 10th. We’re used to payment problems!
