Question Have you ever used a crowdsourcing or crowdfunding site in your business?

There has been a huge rise in the use of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding over the past year. While I have not personally ever raised money through crowdfunding, I know folks who have, and there is even a crowdfunding platform specifically for gaming-related ventures (www.gamcrowd.com) that recently launched.

I'm currently in the middle of overseeing a crowdsourcing campaign to develop the user interface design for a new app. The platform we are using for that effort is www.99designs.com. I have to admit I'm pretty impressed by the process and the way it has worked thusfar. We're running a contest where the winner gets a reward, and the creativity and variety of approaches suggested by the 24 individual designers who chose to participate, and who have collectively made 134 distinct design submissions, has been impressive to me. We are now in the process of selecting a few finalists who will work to further improve their designs based on feedback we provide, each hoping they will be the winner. I've been pleased enough to know I will choose to conduct other design contests in the future.

So, for this week's poll, I thought I would ask how many folks have used crowdsourcing or crowdfunding in running their business. Besides answering the poll question, be sure to share platforms you have used or are considering using. And be sure to share your experiences and recommendations based on those experiences.

Your crowdsourcing stuff sounds interesting - what sort of pricing is involved ?

Crowdfunding is pretty irrelevant in this field there is plenty of free cash generated even from basic operations. Raising cash by giving away equity just doesn't make sense.

The pricing for app design contests at 99designs is shown on the following web page:

99designs.com/pricing/mobile-app-design. We ran a contest at the gold level, which has a base price of $1,299, and then paid a couple hundred dollars beyond that to have three pages of the app designed, rather than the standard single page. There are actually six pages in the actual app, but the final three pages are natural extensions of the three pages for which we requested designs.

Part of what has been interesting to me is to see some of the assumptions we made about how the app should work questioned by the designers. In some cases it reinforced our views, where in other cases we thought the perspective of the designer resulted in an improvement to how the app should work from a functional perspective.

I was to quick in my response to the poll. I only read the crowdfunding part and didn't see crowdsourcing.

As a matter of fact I used 99designs a few times for designing a new website. The result is always good. Many good designers that do an effort to make a good layout and are willing to make changes.
Freelancer.com has also an option for crowdsourcing but the quality here was much lower than with 99designs. It is cheaper but if you want quality you should go for 99designs.

Based on your comment I have made an appropriate adjustment to the vote counts.

Never used either, but I have considered crowdfunding for two of my projects in the past.

GamCrowd is not something I'll consider, because of the 300+VAT application fee which I find totally unnecessary. I don't like paying for a promise.

I've not used crowdfunding to finance anything I've done personally but I have used it to make investments in small, growing companies - outwith the gaming space.

You have to be very careful regarding what you're actually helping to fund and how you'll eventually get your money back. A lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon to raise cash without a sensible business plan and also, from the other side, people are investing without researching enough. Not for the faint hearted but worthy of review if you feel you have the acumen to fully understand the risks involved.

    Hi Guys, Michael,

I've used 99designs they created an awesome logo for us back in 2013 when I was working at my friend's agency.

With regards to crowdfunding - that's the industry I am working in now. We are creating a marketing suit of tools for entrepreneurs and agencies looking to launch a crowdfunding campaign. The app should be ready in April.

I left Amaya in October 2015. In fact, I need to message @Anthony to change my username to just Kristal CM.

    Have a lovely day.

    Kri

The sober result of crowdsourcing in Germany is, that 900.000 regular IT-employees will suffer under price dumping in the coming years.

The other side of the coin.
