Cool Have you heard about Digital IDENTITY Wallets?

In Europe, the eIDAS regulation, approved in May 2024, mandates that every EU country must roll out at least one European Digital Identity Wallet by the end of next year, and service providers who need strong user authentication will also be required to accept ID wallets as a valid method for online verification, therefore impacting the iGaming industry.

Digital wallets have already gained popularity for payments, and now ID wallets aim to bring the same convenience to identity verification. But are you familiar with them, and are you prepared for this shift?

I had not heard of this regulation before now, and thus had no idea it was happening. So, I did a little bit of research just now and thought I would share some of what I discovered.

The original European eIDAS Regulation (electronic IDentification, Authentication and trust Services") was passed a decade ago. An amendment to this original regulation was adopted effective 20 May 2024 (2024/1183).

It amends the previous Digital Identity Regulation by requiring member states to offer at least one EU Digitial Identity Wallet to all citizens and residents by 2026. The wallet will be a mobile app enabling users to identify themselves to public and private online services, all over Europe. In addition, users will be able to store, present and share digital documents (everything from university diplomas to train tickets) as well as electronically sign or seal documents.

Here is the European Commission web page with further information:

A digital ID and personal digital wallet for EU citizens, residents and businesses

To help create greater awareness of the this initiative, we will use this poll as our GPWA Newsletter poll of the week.

I had no idea about this. Maybe I read something about it and didn't pay attention, but it's definitely something I will look into. Thanks for the heads-up.

I am still very skeptical about this, important to consider the privacy issues that may arise when using such wallets.

Indeed, the impact of eIDAS 2.0 is significant, and while it’s primarily a European regulation, there are already work streams in Latin America preparing to align with these standards. Some initiatives are exploring compatibility with European identity frameworks to ensure smoother cross-border interactions and regulatory compliance. It’s definitely a space to watch as digital identity evolves globally.

I totally get your skepticism—privacy is a big deal when it comes to digital identity. The good thing is that with eIDAS 2.0, all the data stays on the user’s device, and they have full control over what to share, with whom, and for what purpose. Plus, access can be revoked anytime. It’s all about finding the right balance between security, convenience, and privacy

Heard about the digital IDs (incredibly happy that the governments will have our fingerprints in their incredibly secured databases that will most definitely never leak), but the digital wallet stuff is news one to me.
