Question Have you (or will you) investigate or try Twitter alternatives?

Twitter continues to take steps that have alienated its users. Most recently it limited the number of tweets that can be viewed. Search Engine Land ran an article this Monday titled "Twitter didn't just block unregistered users, in blocked Google Search". According to that article, last Friday just after Twitter blocked unregistered users, the Google search "site:twitter.com" stated there were 471 million search results. When the story was published on Monday, that had dropped to 180 million results. Although who knows, I just tried the same search and got 1.24 billion results.

In the wake of Twitter turmoil, Meta is releasing its "Threads" alternative to Twitter tomorrow. Here are a couple articles about that launch:

The Guardian: Instagram’s Threads app to launch 6 July amid mass backlash against Elon Musk’s Twitter.
Search Engine Land: Threads, Meta’s Twitter alternative, to launch tomorrow.

Other alternatives have also emerged. Hear are a couple of articles about leading contenders published by TechCrunch:

A beginner’s guide to Mastodon, the open source Twitter alternative
Jack Dorsey-backed Twitter alternative Bluesky hits the App Store as an invite-only app (former Twitter co-creator and CEO)

For this week's poll I ask if you have, or plan to consider using any of these or other Twitter alternatives. Besides voting in the poll, please share your thoughts about Twitter and the competition that seems to be heating up.

Never been big on Twitter but will check out Threads out of curiosity. Really don't like the direction Twitter is going in these days.

I downloaded Threads yesterday, and I'm enjoying it.

Personally, I find it very interesting because the people I follow on Instagram are very different from those I follow on Twitter (even the languages are different), so my experience has been a bit chaotic but fun at the same time. However, I don't think it will be useful for this type of business because since it's a Meta app, it must adhere to the same guidelines regarding content and advertising.

Meta might have some success but the privacy of Threads is not good. They record far more data than Twitter and they don't make deleting your account easier.

People are not liking Twitter but on the other end do people support a company that constantly takes other company ideas?

I think Facebook cares less about people and I don't want to see one company own all the major social platforms. Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook. Monopolies don't benefit anyone.

I agree with you that monopolies are not beneficial, and I believe that competition will be good for Twitter. I enjoy using it, and I understand the need for monetization and the challenges that come with it. However, users have been complaining for months about the decisions that seem to go back and forth creating a sense of uncertainty.

The emergence of other alternative platforms provides some relief to this uncertainty. Now it depends on Twitter to pay closer attention to the user experience or let other platforms take advantage of this moment.

Seems like Bluesky is making good progress of late, there's certainly been more noise about folks leaving X and moving across.

Aesthetically it's like a clean, early twitter - I like it.

X is the one we are most accustomed to using and we do not use other social networking sites as much because of the large number of users and the wide range of topics we are exposed to.
I feel that X is also superior in terms of its ability to spread the word.
The above is what I feel in terms of marketing.
In terms of private social networking, I feel that Threads is easier to reply to people I don't know than X. In that sense, I think it will become more popular in the future.

Having used some of the alternatives alongside X since this thread started, the reality for us is that the engagement and usage of the others is so low as to make them virtually pointless at this stage.

The biggest headache for twitter is its inconsistency in the terms and conditions. I see a lot of users who are still active but are creating contents that have banned many accounts. This goes with youtube channels as well. But twitter is supposed to be a bit more flexible with gamble contents.
