Thumbs up Help to FIGHT forum spam

Today I had a new member that l checked up on and found them to be a spammer and was able to act accordingly. I get a lot of spammers at my forum so I need to catch them before any damage is done.

The damage is having them post links, being added to my member count when they are not legit and most importantly adding a bogus email to my mailer that will cause more headaches down the road.

To combat this problem I use the site Stop Forum Spam

This site was created to be used as a central database for known forum spambots. I hope it proves useful to you, the administrator of an online forum when trying to find information about questionable registrations.
We catch a lot of spammers trying to register on forums. And we post their details here.

I use Stop Forum Spam also, and when I get a new registration, I usually will run a search on their ip address. Stop Forum Spam ranks well and you can tell if someone that just registered is a spammer.

Doing this sort of "background check" has virtually eliminated spam. Many times these are spam bots anyway so they are useless to show in the membership rolls.

I also have a plug in on the forum that restricts posting any links or images prior to making 10 posts. That helps out when the porn stars sign up in the dead of night and display there wares before I can catch them.

vBulletin is a great program but due to the power, it attracts spammers like flies to fresh.... well you know.

That's funny since I just stumbled on that place yesterday since we had a spammer get through over at the GIA.

I had searched for his registering IP and that site came up in the search.

Since this member had used the same ip 3 different times with 3 different acounts to spam his Viagra crap I banned the ip.

One thing I used to do with spammers in the past is publish their email addresses on a page on a website. The page was never in navigation but could be found from the sitemap so it was spidered. This allowed the spambots to find the spammers email addy's so they would also get spammed.

Obviously they often use throw-away accounts, but in order to sign up at forums since they have to authenticate the accounts at least they are valid accounts and at times I am sure that this accelrates their need to throw the accounts away....

Yes, they are valid accounts and adds to the frustration of having to deny membership based on their email host like gmail and the reason I have to 'investigate' new members and th reason sites like these are vital.

Personally, I would love to ban the entire gmail domain, but that would be counter-productive for me as the average player will only have a free hosted email account therefore not allowing them access is not good for either of us.

I understand Robin....just makes the job of us admins more difficult....lol

I rarely will ban an ip either, but once there is a pattern I often do....

I will put that site on my list of regular stops now....
