Former NSW premier Barry O'Farrell to lead offshore online gambling review

Social services minister Scott Morrison says offshore websites account for almost 60% of $1.6bn online gambling industry and are beyond Australian control

    .

Offshore online gambling sites will be reviewed as part of an investigation ordered by the federal government.

The social services minister, Scott Morrison announced the review on Monday into online wagering operators, to be undertaken by Barry O’Farrell, the former New South Wales premier.

Gambling: Australians bet more and lose more than anyone else

There are about 30 operators running legal sites in Australia. But almost 60% of the $1.6bn online gambling industry is going offshore to more than 2,000 sites beyond the control of Australian regulators, Morrison said.

“For the vast majority of Australians, having a punt [has been] part of a recreational pastime for many generations and it’s part of who we are,” he told reporters in Canberra. But for 2% of the population gambling was a major problem, affecting their families, he said.

Morrison hopes the review will recommend measures to protect consumers who can fall prey to offshore, illegal websites.
Its terms of reference include the economic impacts of illegal sites on legal Australian businesses, international measures, and options to educate the public – including warnings and campaigns.

Representatives from the racing industry, professional sports, wagering organisations and state and territory governments will be consulted in coming weeks, with the public to also get a chance to have its say.

Recommendations will be given to the federal government by 18 December.

When asked if he planned to legislate changes before the next election, Morrison said he would not prejudge the review.

I would guess it will never be regulated here, not for casino.

The government makes far too much money from the pokies in clubs here to let it go ahead. If people stopped playing in clubs a lot of them would shut down because that's where they make their money too.

I imagine Gooner will come in and post some handy info as he knows quite a lot about it. I have nothing on hand right now and not entirely familiar because we don't take Aussie players since it's illegal.

Xenophone has been on a tyrade to prevent it happening for religious reasons but to be honest, you don't really hear much about online gambling here. When I say I work for an online casino, please ask me if I deal cards. They don't actually understand you can play online.

Online bookies are legal and regulated. Doubt casinos will ever be.

    Interesting Thanks Renee .

it seems to me that if they do a full review as it seems they are going to do and realize that they are losing many millions to overseas companies that they may Just want operators to at least have Australian Licenses to operate within Australian Borders. so it would make no sense to ban companies completely. Rather the government would want to earn the Extra Income in tax etc by welcoming "Officially Licensed" Online Casinos ..

Huge Market to Lose if that's what doe s Transpire eventually

When John Howard was in govt they did a review and instead of leaving it open, they made it illegal.

Yeah it might seem like it should be regulated because they are losing money, but they will look at the bigger picture and will likely lose more money if they regulate than if they don't. Like I said, people don't know about it. If they know about it, they are more likely to do it. If you actually knew how many pokies are everywhere and how many people actually play, you'd probably understand where I'm coming from. Every nightclub has a pokie room. Every pub has one. And the pokies are usually in the smoking rooms because they are open and you're not allowed to smoke inside here. Every RSL or services club has pokies. They pay HUGE licensing fees and royalties to the government.

I'm not a polly or legal though, so what would I know. That's my opinion coming from someone who lives here.

All of these articles are related to sportsbetting which is already legal. They are just looking at the laws surrounding the online bookies who don't have a license and are still taking bets.

I didn't see any mention of the casino part?

Thanks Renee Ye I may be getting a Little Confused as I understand it and reading these again your spot on they do seem to refer to Sports rather than casinos. I keep seeing the words Online gaming all over and I assumed they will look at casinos too maybe not ? For me when i see the term Online Gaming I automatically think Casinos and maybe its because I have only really been involved with casinos and not sports betting that this happens ..
