We have been doing around 100 per month, we have around 1700 perhaps more? nearly everything ranks in the top 20 now, it's worked well but no two content writers are the same, without sounding biased "Hard not to" but content quality I think we have the best written and personable content by far. it's not just a case of doing research on page seo etc but actual talent that brings in readers... When I get my tech reviews i tend to use CNET or Engadget because apart from being well written it feels like a real writer talking to me not just someone that has good command of English, there are certain things that attract you to a site.

Sure, yeah agree that having good content writers creation engaging and well-researched articles is important. We are moving towards same strategy, but not at the same volume currently. If you don't mind me asking, is that helping garner backlinks as well? Are you actively pursuing them, or are you generating them simply from having great content.

We have picked up quite a lot of backlinks, mainly on the strategy articles and news articles. The do come especially sharing via twitter or Tumblr, the links tend to be picked up easier

Gambling is THE most competitive niche to be an affiliate in. In my experience you will get nowhere without a decent budget.

Your content could the best in the world (and should for other reasons), but almost no one from your targeted audience has a website or blog or something to mention you! You hunting gamblers not blogger! It is myth that good content brings backlinks by itself. You need to promote your content.

I agree.
(1) Quality content is the best way to get inbound links. It's tough and takes a long time. I am convinced it's the best way to get high quality links. Make content so good, that you become an authority.

(2) Offer exceptional unique content to webmaster for a referral link. You are going to find many of those webmasters will remove your links. I've had bad expereiences where I write awesome content for a webmaster and find my link removed some months later. Very frustrating.

(3) Social media. Facebook, twitter, Pintrest are my big ones.

(4) Also, don't forget youtube. Make a channel with videos for your niche. Again, make it engaging.

(5) Participating on forums in the gaming sector.

(6) Info graphics. Make some nice infographics and post them on the infographics sites. (Also pintrest)

(7) Find competitors links and if they are high quality, try to get your link on the site as well.

Anyone else can suggest something else?

What NOT to do:
(1) NOT GOOD => ANY Directories, link exchanges, and paid blog posts. It worked up to a few years ago.

(2) side wide links on ANY site. This brings too many inbound links from the same IP address.

(3) More than a few links (max 2) from the same IP. Beware of webmasters with 100's of sites. They are on limited IP addresses.

(4) Pay an "SEO" expert to give you links.

(5).. the list goes on....

Despite all the factors (more than a few hundreds) there are 3 most important right now:
1) Content.

Content Quantity - How many topics (keyword groups) does your site cover + How many additional pages you have to give topical trust to the main pages, etc.
Content Quality - How each piece of content is optimized (number of words, keywords usage, LSI usage, synonyms, text structure & format, using internal & external links, etc.)

2) Links.

Links quantity - Number of Root Domains needed to get into top 10, their variety, anchor text variety, etc.

Links quality - How strong are the domains/pages that are linked to your pages, are they relevant to your content, etc.

3) Rank Brain.

Even if you are done with previous 2 , and most of your keywords are in top 10, there is still a chance you might not get what you wanted.
As now Rank Brain (Google's AI) is looking at other metrics like CTR, User Experience, etc. to decide if you deserve to be higher or not.

As for your sites, it doesn't look like you put much effort into content alone. With this kind of content even good links can not guaranty you even top 20.

As for the "Where to get the links?", there are hundreds of ways to get them for free:
- Directories
- Start up review sites
- Job sites
- Article directories
- Blogs
- Forums
- Event websites
- Donation pages
- Video Websites
- and so on and so on

I always teach my newbie link builders to look their site like as it was a real local business (hotel, for example), what would you do to run it and in what ways you can tell about it/show/explain it to the Internet.

Don't do link exchanges if you are doing in sake for improving your serp ranking that will do no good to your website if you want ranking boost say focus on getting one way link to your website.

I'm with Wonderpunter on this regarding content.

You can spend weeks and weeks and months and months and a lot of money trying to find back links. The likelyhood is that a lot of the links you will end up getting are not going to help you so you basically need to get 3 links for every 1 that "might" give your site a boost.

All this time and expense would be better off spent writing and buying good quality content.

Forget all about backlinks. There are sites in the gambling niche that are scoring very highly with a dozen or two dozen backlinks ONLY. And these are backlinks which have occurred organically.

Backlink hunting is a waste of time. Perhaps when your website is 2 years old and full of content, then you could spend some time hunting for one or two quality links but before then it is just a waste of resources.

Obviously that is just my opinion but it is what I have found from experience. And I've been "lucky" enough to have gained thousands of lovely dodgy backlinks from having my old forum spammed to hell. Now there was a fun waste of a few months!!!

Don't go for buying links for your websites. Rather it best if you can do it manually. Google really like natural links.

I am happy you have this kind of experience but I have a completely different one. In 8 years since I started, there has been not a single link that occurred organically. My pages in some territories are much better (from content and technical point of view) than the competition but after hiring a SEO expert he told me that cometition simply has better link profile. And no matter how good te content is, I will not beat them. But that is just mine experience

Man! Well, maybe a better question is how to gain free traffic. The answer to that is using site tracking, getting your link on free sites using a goal and action plan, then seeing what free sites are best to see if you can improve incoming traffic at those sites.

Whoosh! Action, goals, action plan, site tracking, grinding and sleep. You have to be a strong character.

If you are the one in charge of marketing, you need to be driven to succeed like someone who's drowning wants to breath.

1. Do article submission.
2. Do blog posting.
3. Use unique content.
4. Use high PA or DA sites for submission.
5. Post in the relavent category.

Since I started to improve the content on my review pages (images, stats etc..) and added a news section, I started to get a lot more traffic and some free links started to arrive slowly but surely!

Patience might be tough but worth it.. I 'll tell you when I get there...

Otherwise, depending on your markets, there are a lot of Q&A sites that allow backlinks. And they are relevant depending on the thread you choose.
Also, I would definitely look into building a strong social presence... It can only help.

Eventually, getting free links might not be as free as you would like it to be. For example, you can hire a freelancer to contact a lot of websites in your niche in order to ask for a link in one way or another... Among the quantity you might even get some results, but it is hardly free is it ?
