On a budget, right?
What I suggest you do is go and find yourself some good free blogs on which you can post your own content on.
Blogger.com
Wordpress.com
Sites like that. You then create yourself a few blogs, and write top quality content. Place a link here and there, and you will have yourself some quality links. Be careful on with the 'gambling related content' as it could raise a flag if you over do it. What happens then is they will delete your blog, and we don't want that.
Once done, find yourself some bookmarking sites and sign up and bookmark your free sites, use twitter etc, and post links to your free blogs there too. Facebook the same. Then, open a few more blogs. Write super quality content on these blogs, and post a link to your first blog posts you did.
If you do this with care, you will build yourself some quality links, at no cost.
If you could afford it, buy a domain, put a site on it, and write unique content. Put a few quality links on it and voila. Another one. If you could afford another one, on a different hosting company perhaps, then get another one. Write amazing content on this too. Point a link and you're done. Quite a few people here do this actually.
Quality my friend. Lots of work. But, in the end it will pay off.
If it is money you're short, it's time and effort you need. So, get to work!
Best of luck!

Here are a few good backlink sources you can use yourself of.
1. Trade links with other casino affiliates. The best scenario would be if you had two affiliate sites. Then you could use Site A to link to other affiliates, and in return they would link to Site B. By doing this you would avoid a footprint.
2. QA sites (Quora, Yahoo Answers etc) are a good resource for some free backlinks + free traffic. These are mostly no follow links but will boost the authority of your site, and also make it more attractive for other affiliates to trade links with.
3. Social Media Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Blogger, Diigo, Skyrock, Tumblr etc will give you many free backlinks. There is a site called knowem . com where you can enter the name of your brand and see all platforms where that username is available. Then you just register to all those platforms and put a link going back to your affiliate site.

If you get a good blog running and don't spam too much dumb links in it and do it subtle, it works for sure. I've found that just contacting bloggers and such and ask for backlinks/advertising for a low cost is more time efficient though. If you're on a low budget or none at all starting your own blogs is just fine.

Opportunities are mostly missed because they look too much like work. I would suggest to go to bed 2 hours later each and every day of the week, and spend that on making those quality blogs. Besides working all other hours on your site. So what if you're tired, you can sleep when you're dead.
If you are on a budget, as in have no money, then this is a great way to get yourself started. It DOES work yes.
If you are on a budget / need money / want to make it, you have to do whatever it takes to do it.
Quality. It is what makes it all tick. Google is like a carbon copy machine. When it sees a blog with unique quality content, it will instantly index it.
If you smash 100's of low quality crappy blogs with half unique content, then you can forget about it.
Creating quality blogs with quality content and a link 'here and there', for the long run, seriously can benefit anyone who is on a budget / has no money. If not on Google straight away, then at least on Bing and Yahoo. Because there, every link you can get counts.
Since you've asked: Yes, I do have blogspot blogs. I do have wordpress.com blogs. And, I maintain them too. Quite a few of my sites get traffic purely because I've linked them from those 'free blogs' of mine.
You decide the level of quality on those blogs. You are the only one who can then get links from there. Of course this is valuable if you do it right.

First thing: you have to put in great content. Then use social media like facebook, youtube, and G +. It should be more than enough
Maybe in 2010.. I don't find that directory sites offer any value. That's my opinion at the moment. I don't even reach out for article reviews. We are trying the method of building good content. Hopefully that will be enough. Honestly, I'm not 100% convinced it will be.

I believe first you must focus on creating valuable and useful content and resources...then reach out to who these resources and content are for...if good links/word of mouth/referals will come naturally and be high quality.
While there are things you can do to help, sure, I think far too many people get caught in spending time/money on 'how can I get some backlinks and people to link to me'..when they should be thinking, and spending time/money on 'how can I create or add value to my target audience and give value & create useful, resourceful content or offer something nobody else does..etc... by doing this they will naturally link/refer/tell friends about my site'.
Thats my philosophy anyway.

The trick is the combination of very high quality content and some backlinks to get some initial google traffic. For some longtail keywords the very high quality content alone can be sufficient. But you have to be 1 class ahead of existing articles.
I have observed that google is quite good in observing how certain page satisfies users searching for certain keyword. So once you are getting at least some traffic (few clicks/day) an you are significantly better than the competition (in terms of bounce rate, time on page or whether user continues to search further after he visits your site), google will pull you up even without additional backlinks.
But there are 2 problems with this strategy:
- is that it's not easy to create content that is 1 class better than the competition. You have to be extremely lucky to find copywriter who can do that or write the content yourself.
- if keyword has extreme competition "casino", "online casino" you need a lot of authority to jump to positions where you get the initial traffic. SERP traffic is distributed in a way that 1st get 40%, 2nd 20% and if 10 of 10 results on first page satisfy the query then almost noone goes further to 2nd page. If you are on position 80 you'll get nothing even from monster keywords.
That is why it is better to focus on high quality and longtail keywords.
Example: Months ago I have decided to make an experiment. I'm pretty good in slot math and casino bonus math so I have decided to write an article about bonus hunting. The best article I can write. I have spent 3 weeks fulltime writing, doing computer simulations, reverse-engineering popular slots etc. I think that noone before has written such article on this topic so it should be definitelly "high quality content".
Here is the result btw: https://casino.guru/bonus-hunting
I have decided not to do any linkbuilding on that article because I was wondering whether the better quality alone is enough. And the result?
- 3 months after publishing the article is on 1st google page on "bonus hunting" keyword in google.com (depending on location)
- it currently gets 1-3 organic vistis daily. Some visitors spend hour or more reading it and come back to finish it.
- I got 1st organic backlink ever - one guy who runs affiliate page made repost with link. He probably wanted to do some link exchange as well but it has never happened with any other content.
So now I'm putting even more accent on the content quality because it pays out.

Great post, Casino-Guru, and indeed a very high quality page that you have written, well done.
I don't quite agree with google figuring out well which pages are the best quality-wise. A lot of sites (especially in non UK markets) rank way higher than my site, even though I think my site is clearly a lot better terms of quality. When I compare certain same keyword pages/articles, this is what I find 9 out of 10 times:
My content: fresh, 500 words - 2k words, well written, correct spelling, informative, nice images etc. In other words, pleasant to read and adds value.
Other content: not updated in 4 years, poorly written, bad grammar, lots of spelling mistakes, sometimes 100 words or less, sometimes even empty pages with just 1 or 2 keywords, broken images.
I am not saying my content is the best in the world but on some pages it is ten-fold better than the content that is outranking me. And not just for the "big" keywords as well. I think Google just puts way too much weight on age, domain authority, backlinks etc and not enough on the true quality of the content. There are so many, top ranking sites that have extremely poor content, it is unreal (and frustrating as well).
I just wonder....do you get at least any traffic on those keywords? Because otherwise Google simply doesn't have any quality signals from those pages and thus uses other signals (domain age, backlinks).
I'm quite sure that mechanism which I described above works for some keywords but maybe google misinterprets signals for some other.
Example: for keyword "How to play slots" the higher time on page is the better but for keyword "how old is Barrack Obama" the shorter time on page is better because it's question with simple answer.
And something similar with freshness...
My friend once said: "Google is like 3 years old child. Sometimes it surprises you how amazing things it can do and sometimes it's incredibly silly"
