Question How many days will you spend traveling away from home overnight this year?

I spend last night away from home in a hotel to attend a land-based gaming conference for the next couple days (the Southern Gaming Summit). But rather than use that as a reason to come up with some new poll on the topic of conference attendance, I thought it would be a lot more interesting to have a more general poll on travel plans this year.

How many nights do you expect to spend away from home this year? But, more importantly, and more interestingly, beyond just estimating the number of nights to answer the poll question, share with us why you will be away from home, where you will be traveling, what you will be doing, and who will be along for the trip (or not). And also the exciting high-points and painful low-points you expect in your travels.

Well, the low-point of my travels this year was a planned trip-from-hell. I left early in the morning to fly from Boston to Chicago to Las Vegas for a trip with some executives from a casino there, and then got on a plane for a flight to San Francisco where I took a redeye back to Boston, arriving back home 25 hours after my departure. I accomplished what I wanted to on that trip, so I felt good about that, but my body didn't like what I had done to it.

The high-point this year will be a ten day trip to Costa Rica with my family and with my parents and with my brothers and sisters and their families. It is my parent's 60th wedding anniversary this year, and so the trip is being sponsored by them as a way for us to all be able to spend some time doing something interesting together. My parents very much enjoy traveling, especially where there is an opportunity to see interesting wildlife, and so everyone is really looking forward to this trip with each other and with them. Especially since my father had been very ill earlier this year.

Then, for me, there will be traveling to a number of conferences. ICE, LAC, Indian Gaming, Southern Gaming Summit, iGaming Super Show, CBG Affiliate Weekend, BAC, EiG, and G2E.

Now, the hard part is adding that all up. I think it comes out to between six and seven weeks all together.

I would say I would spend between 1 and 2 weeks travelling a year with conferences/meetings etc - I try to keep it at a minimum though

So far this year I've spent about 3 weeks in total away from home.

I was in Thailand for a week in Jan, and every couple of weekends I spend with my family - they live about 1.5 hours away so it's a weekend thing.

If I count family visits and a planned trip to South Africa for a month in November, I'd say it will be another ~6 weeks away.
I suppose looking back thats about how much time i'm away every year if you count conferences and other small trips away..

I'd like it to be more though

We take two trips to california each year to see my wifes family (inc our little baby niece), but as that doesn't really count as a holiday we like to go and visit somewhere new too.

That plus weekends away, weddings and seeing the family I'd say somewhere in the 6-7 week range.

Oh ok, I thought it was work related I go and see my mother in Spain as well as go on holidays/weekends away to see friends.

What I meant is that I aim to keep work trips to a minimum

Extra traveling this year, although I can gladly say it's not all work related...

One hell of a detailed poll.

Five weeks or less and more than four weeks away from home overnight.
Is there a difference between "Five weeks or less" and "more than four weeks"?

And I thought you were good at maths!
    5 weeks = 35 days
    4 weeks = 28 days
So you would vote for this option if you are away for anything between 29 to 35 days.
Though I do agree the poll is written a little strangely; it would have been clearer to write it in days, like I just did.

    I voted For 7 - 8 weeks.
Though that does depend on your definition of "home", because 6+ weeks of that will be spent in our second home in Czech Republic.

I'm planning on going to Europe for an overseas trip this year Hopefully that will be for about 3 weeks, and fingers crossed it will be a great trip with no lows lol Besides that, I'm going to Sydney in the next 3 weeks for a nice weekend away. I enjoy working hard, but I also love to travel and enjoy myself as well

I live in Canberra. It's a nice place to live, but it's pretty quiet I don't recommend visiting Canberra at the moment though, it is getting insanely cold! I almost have to take my heater to bed with me at night time haha

I definitely travel a lot less than I'd like to. I travelled a lot last year - went to places like Amsterdam, Marbella, Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, Macau and Hong Kong - so was out for about 6 weeks. I took a trip to Vegas in January for my birthday, but so far no where else.

Think it's time I start planning a few trips. Was looking to go away during the Olympics as I live 10 mins away from the stadium and was not looking forward to the crowds - but I've ended up with tickets to the Men's 200m!

If I had things my way, I'd be travelling at least 4 months each year.

How on earth do you manage to go on so many trips? I'm so jealous.

@ michael1981 - I know you're going to laugh when I say this, but I really like Canberra. I haven't been for a few years but last time I went I had such an amazing time. They have some decent hip hop clubs there, well at least they did last time I went. Is Quattros still open as a club or did they turn it into a restaurant?

I worked hard and I played even harder! Wanted to enjoy life and not let anything stop me...Plus I had a lot of TOIL that I had to use, and I didn't want to waste them in a city I've lived in my entire life - so the trips had to happen! It made 2011 my best year yet! Great food, fantastic people and amazing cities - couldn't have asked for more!

Next stop for me...South America and Hawaii!

P.S. Why work to live? Just live!

I am not really sure how to answer this and ironically, this poll (for me) is directly tied into the poll of having animals....

Since I have 3 cats at home, I can not leave for any length of time.......

This is the biggest thing preventing me from getting a kitty.
My parents live in another city and we go there often, maybe every 3-4 weeks and stay at least overnight, if not for the weekend. So getting a kitty is not an option. They have a cat too so they dont travel to see us often. Maybe once every couple of months they come for a day trip.
