Default How many outside links on a page before google penalises?

Well the title says it all. I thought it was 50, but was just linking to someone who said no more than 40 on a page. Which is right?

    Cheers,
    Joe

I doubt there's any hard and fast rule.

The problem with having lots of links on a page is that it dilutes the amount of PR you're giving your link partners. PR is a finite resourse that is divided by the number of links on your page. The more links, the less pr you're giving...

Look at Yahoo or DMOZ, those site are nothing more then a collection of outbound links, some categories have hundreds of links on a single page, yet they're still indexed and still have high PR.

In Google guidelines it's recommended to have no more than 100 links per page.

I don't think they really penalize. I had more than 100 at one page and no problems, even PR was high enough. They probably just can ignore links/text above certain level.

I read somewhere that it was 30, but if you look at some of the TGPs they have got well over 1,000 per page. I guess it boils down to whether google thinks you are creating a link list to improve SE placement.
