Default Hungary to require operators to obtain a license

If you want to operate in Hungary, you're going to have to get a license. The Hungarian Parliament voted 235-69 to require Internet gambling operators to obtain a license and pay some fees in order to have access to the Hungarian market.

The concession comes with an annual HUF 100 million (EUR 338,891) fee, a fortnightly gambling tax of 20 per cent of net takings and a quarterly supervision fee of 2.5 per cent with a minimum of HUF 100,000 (EUR 33 and a maximum of HUF 50 million (EUR 169,445).

'The government estimated at HUF 10 billion (EUR 33.88 million) last autumn the revenue to be expected from the new regulations on online gambling.'
If the big bookies will not operate in Hungary any more, the government estimated revenue will be 33.88 cents...

This seems like an extremely high annual fee, while I guess the taxes are reasonable.

I would think that even if online casinos could afford the license that they would stay out of the Hungarian market to prevent other countries from requiring these outrageous license fees.

A fortnightly tax seems like the most offputting thing, considering how volatile the industry is.

They are all taking example of France. Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and others are all looking at the wrong people to follow.

Does anyone have a good reference for gambling legality worldwide? We're in the process of updating...

I wonder what the size of the Hungarian online gambling market is, and what it's worth.

It is hard to say, and I've never heard that someone analysed the hungarian market so deeply. As our main focus is on the Hungarian market, we usually check the news about the regulations in this country. I can say that this regulations are made to clear the market, and to give a big chance (monopoly), to their own company Tippmixpro, which is the first Hungarian online bookmaker. This guys really don't have a f.cking idea about how big the online gambling market is, they just think something, and seconds later they vote accordingly.
Actually we are running a survey to analyze a little bit the Hungarian sportsbetting market, and I can publish here some of the results if anybody needs it.

    Cheers.
