Default I am planning to learn Tagalog

For 2013 I am going to make it point to learn the language as best I can. While attending family functions of my GF now for 5 years I still cant understand a thing.. LOL

Time to change that up and secretly learn the language.. haha

Going to be funny -- see if they talk about me

Be careful for what you wish for, you may hear things that you don’t want to know. I live in a country where the main language is Greek and people assume that I don’t understand and believe me they get a shock when I reply back to them and tell them off.

People can be mean when they think you don’t understand their language

    Gotta agree with Maria..

My ex was greek and hearing them speak for a few years I understood every word. One day they were saying something they didnt want me to hear and i said something back to them and they were completely shocked that I had understood.

"Did you understand that?" and I said "yes I'm not stupid and I'm a fast learner. I understand everything you say and have done for quite a long time now". And the response was "so what did we say then?" and i told them. They never spoke nastily or about anything they didnt want me to know in greek in front of me again. I did take that opportunity to go to school and learn to read and write too, which to this day I can still do so at least I took something positive away from that relationship.

Anyway, so although it might be a cool idea, I would recommend letting her know rather than learning it on the sly just for that reason.

The sad thing is that people say mean things when you are standing in front of them. There was one time I was in the hospital, here in Cyprus we have so many foreigners that Cypriots are so bed up with them. Well I asked a nurse ( in English) where was the office of the eye doctor and she started to tell me in Greek that I shouldn’t be living in Cyprus if I couldn’t speak Greek, that we come here to take their men and bla bla bla. In the mean time I let her talk all she wanted and when it was my turn to talk she didn’t know where to put her face and run for her life. I could have complained, but thing are bad enough here for women so I thought I let it go. She was just a bitter middle age woman.

youre right Renee, but maybe not all people are like that, there exist those people who compliment foreigners instead of backbiting them. Then maybe in that case, you need to hear what they've said. <just my opinion>

My folks took me shopping with them a few years back. They needed a new kitchen and all the bits that go with it.

So we're in this huge store, and as always.. people come and ask if they can help before you get a chance to look around.

Told them to come back in 30 mins.. so we're looking around.. and in Hindi, I tell my folks.. "thats way too much, you can pick it up for cheaper elsewhere"

The very white man, in perfect Hindi looks across and says "I'll beat their prices by 5% and look after you"

Turns out he lived in India for 15 years and spoke Hindi better than anyone in my family.

Hey GPFC I commend you on your ambition for 2013. I'm into languages generally but had to Google Tagalog I'll admit! Good luck with your learning project

Yes indeed it won't be easy but I should make an attempt. Actually I am starting to understand some of it when i hear them speaking because allot of it is a mix of Spanish which I can speak already somewhat. Well see how it goes - I am going to spend some time working on it in 2013. Im currently working on a diet plan - LOL and figuring out daily menus for the next 60 days.. LOL
