Default I Want to Start a News Section

Hey all,

I am in need of some advice again. I want to add a news section to my site and talk about all the latest news that is going on in my industry.

Obviously I will need to find a PR with the news to then talk about it. I see people do this already but how do you copy the article without breaking copy right laws?

If you mean with PR a press release, you shouldn't have any copyright problem as long as you acknowledge the source because press releases are there for maximum distribution.

If it's industry news you want, CalvinAyre.com and iGamingBusiness.com have a 'PR' section where the publish every press release that is sent their way (before or even if they are not turned into proper news stories)

Its' a place to start?

I wouldn't rip off the PR straight off though, be better for your SEO to publish original content no? Find a couple of releases a day and rewrite 200/300 words of the more interesting news.

Thanks for the info.

Ok so I get news from these sites and re-write 60%-70%, do I still need to give credit to the original source when posting on my site? How about images? Can I re-use their images? At what extent, can I hotlink the images (you know to save bw at my end)?

Same questions goes when I get the news from Affiliate Programs. There are affiliate programs out there that obviously indicate that we are free to use their news articles. Do I need to to give credit to these programs in my news post? How about images?

Thank you for your advice.

First of all, I would recommend NEVER to hotlink images. Nothing will **** off the webmasters more than stealing images on their site.

Quotes, so 'John Smith from the John Smith Institutes commented "blah blah"' can be taken as they are and no credit being given.

I'm not sure how you figure 60%-70% rewrite exactly, it just have to be unique enough that the comments and content belongs to you and not someone else. If you take the PR directly as is, then, like Nadakishore said, you just have to link back to the original source you got the news from (say business wire).

Affiliate programs is a little more difficult. We write content for new games and such and if the affiliate wants to take the content and copy and paste in his site, we don't mind so much. But the important thing to note here is that it's not unique content. Google will catch on to that and penalize you.

There really is no lazy way to write good news. You either rewrite the news so it's unique or you put a link to the original news source for PR or you pray and hope that Google doesn't see that your site has no unique content.

Someone else might have a better idea on the PR stuff though.

I disagree with the statement
If you take the PR directly as is, then, like Nadakishore said, you just have to link back to the original source
It is not always that simple.

Just providing a link back to the original source is not always enough and at times is determined by the rights allowed by the source. If the source has a posted notice that is all that is needed then yes, if you provide a link then you should be ok.

Otherwise, you should ask the copyright owner for permission, or you should only publish short excerpts which would be considered fair use.

This is challenged in court very often, and many new organizations and publishers have hired firms that do nothing but search the web for publishers that are republishing their articles without permission.

Just to be clear, it is a violation of copyright laws to copy something identified as a "press release" from any source that is not the actual publisher of the press release. It is very common for news outlets to make modifications to press releases they receive, and to still identify that they are based on a press release.

Certainly you can use a site that publishes a press release issued by another organization to identify that organization and then obtain the original source of the press release directly from them. When you do that you can also request to be added to their future press release distribution. Over time you can pretty easily build up a stream of incoming press releases on that basis. As one example, Lyceum Media will forward their iGaming related press releases to webmasters.

You can also find press releases distributed for republication through various services that explicitly publish press releases for distribution.

Have you tried a google news alert, reading what the news is and writing about it? It seems a bit fundamental. There is a lot of good news on there for the state laws of us poker
