If they attack my site with negative backlinks, how should I respond?

Also, google recently stated the tool will be removed so not sure how effective the tool is, and whether site owners should be too concerned with the impact of bad links pointing at you since these are factors you have no control over in most cases.

Have they had a negative effect on rankings? Google ignores a lot of links, could be ignoring these too.

Was wondering exactly about this. I personally have had an issue like that, not entirely sure whether that is an "attack" or some other form of spam that exists for a completely different reason. Nevertheless, I didn't see any negative effect on any of my rankings back then.

In general I think from Google's perspective this would likely be considered as a negative factor on a large scale, otherwise anyone could sink anyone by just spamming them with "bad" backlinks. Likely these are just ignored.

I have played around with dsisavow.. never seen it make any difference positive or negative.

My website was a target for a negative SEO attack - mainly bad backlinks. The only way to deal with, is by using Google disavow tool. That exactly what I did. I created a list of the spammy domains that pointed to my website and uploaded it the list using Google disavow tool.

Google generally ignores spammy links. If you can spot a common footprint across some 100s or 1000s of links, it's safe to say Google already ignores them.

However, that's little comfort to the webmaster who's on a short end of it. Aside from Disavow, I'd report the offending domains for spam content.

Another thought: if the domains are full of garbage anyway, you probably don't have much to worry about. On the other hand, if the links are from reputable domains, then I'd worry quite a bit.

Yesterday I saw on search console that there are around 4k backlinks from xxx sites pointing to my domain. Currently I don't see any negative impact and google also says that everything is ok. But I didn't wait and hesitate and I disavowed all the spammy domains.

Since I am new to the field and a small competitor, I really doubt that someone did a attack. I believe it's other form of spam.

Thats what they say but if you added a link sitewide across thosuands of spammy pages with rich anchor watch those numbers drop lol, I don't believe them when they say they know whats spam and what's not. I have been hit with negative SEO in the past.

I am seeing thousands of links to single pages in search console > Links section but its odd as the pages either no longer exsist or there are no links on them unless they are cloaking for googlebot?

try using Screaming Frog seo Spider to detect cloaking on your site

Google says they ignore those links but I'm skeptical about it so I always disavow those bad links using the tool on GSC
