We are about to launch a new project, so basically starting from scratch now. Usually I went for cheap stuff and was never satisfied from technical point of view.
Overall, spending the most on the marketing/SEO, but now more into design and website to start with, because that's a base of what we are going to build, thus it has to be strong.
Do you want some number as well? Before it was <$500, now it will be >$1000![]()

I would not start too cheap.
It is better to start with the things right instead of fixing problem after problem afterward and have very inefficient, time-consuming and irritation-generating processes to maintain your website.
I would not start anymore with something that has not all the functionalities I need, is not efficient, is not bug-free, etc. Hence, something customized and unique. Non-customized things are usually too basic, too simple, too standard or even technically a drama.
Something decent with this requirements will cost 5 digits.
MrBinaryAff, I can understand that. I always try to get a design I like before anything else.
Triple7, I know the feeling of dealing with problem after problem all too way. But I don't think I ever had a starting budget in the 5 digits. The highest I have done was a 4 digit budget.
I am starting today and my spend is well into 5 figures. I've outsourced design and build, and there is a stats/database element which is proving a nightmare to build. The site is almost ready after a year in the making, but the coding for the database seems to be causing problems, and a launch is still a couple of weeks off.
I've pretty much zero left now for a marketing budget, but I don't mind going the organic route for that, it's very much a long term project.
I started all this before I knew much about the good word press themes that were out there, so if I was doing it again I'd maybe go that route, and pay for a web design course!
All that said the site is really starting to take shape and the end product will be something that I could never have achieved on my own.
So in conclusion, there is more than one way to skin a cat! But whatever you decide to spend your budget on, make sure you're getting value for money.

Whoever is spending 5 digits to start anything, seriously, PM me and ask what me and my dev team can do about it. Especially if it's related to big data, good performance, etc. With the right toolset anything can be built.
Just saying.
As far as budget for my own projects goes, my biggest one did cost me around 5k plus a lot of time.
As I said, if I knew last year what I know now, I probably would have taken a different option, maybe even yours!
The guys I'm using are great, but they know less about football or betting than I know about coding, and that's pretty close to zilch.
What's the saying about getting given lemons? Not sure, but I'm a dab hand at making lemonade

I think you can do some things with 3 figures. You can do a lot with 4 figures. I'd be loathe to put 5 figures into anything really, because I know so much can be done so cheaply nowadays it would feel like a waste.
I'm very wary of projects that are technically trying to be too ambitious, be careful you don't run out of money with too big a scope.
