The awards are judged and I'm guessing the 2000 word pitch that you put in plays a role in the outcome. We were shortlisted but didn't write anything for the pitch (in part because I forgot, partly because I have no idea what to write, and probably more influentially we had no chance of winning).
I have mixed thoughts about awards - but having entered, won and judged at different times over the years - the winners are usually determined by what's been placed in front of the judges (or in our winning case, we were the only entry in that category lol). Those that are able to explain how they've succeeded over 12 months will usually triumph over those who are less eloquent - even if they have a better site - or who don't write anything.
