in my experience all the meta stuff are the most important thing for your on page stuff...so yeah definately important that you'll optimise them...and there are some great tips from the other guys here as well

Maybe 10 years ago metas might have been some of the most important tags, but certainly not anymore. (some engines don't look at them at all)
