Bought an HP Envy laptop this year for basic updates when travelling.
Nice big touch screen - plenty of RAM etc.
It works OK - but with tablets and desktop in the house it almost never gets used at home.

I forgot.. I also have the Surface pro.. not really a laptop but on the few occasions i decide to go out for a beer I take it with, Also on vacation it gets the basics done and a great tool for anyone who needs to be online large amounts of hours daily but also needs to leave the house without lugging around a bag.. "Goes into the missus handbag nicely"

I only use a desktop.. I need the power for image editing and I just can't work on a laptop. But I did just buy my GF who only writes articles a chromebook, it is working out pretty well. She just uses it for word processing and saves everything to our network drive, or posts right to wordpress.

I am still using my old and faithful HP Pavilion desktop PC, which I bought in 2008 .
Only once I changed the graphic card in 2012 and the pc till now works perfect.

Lenovo Thinkpad for me. I just love the touch and look of the keys.
For those sticking with desktops: You can use a laptop as a desktop, you just need to plug in a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse and remove the battery.
This is what I do. Actually I have two workstations set up with identical monitors, keyboards, mice and even battery chargers and whenever I travel from one location to the other I just grab the laptop and take it with me. And I can also use it as a laptop for smaller tasks on the road.
