I'd go for both! A website that features good and has the content to back it up and voila you're half way there!
BTW-good thread!

I agree with both as well. Funtionality and Content are important, get this right first and then make your site look attractive to go with this and you should have a great site!
User friendliness is really important with a site and the information within the content should draw your users back again, ease of use with great looks will keep the site in the browsers mind!

Tim,
I'm in stitches here! And I completely agree
It's all very well looking nice, but you have to deliver too and make it very easy for the user to find what he/she needs.
Ciao

Looks are very important but also so is the character of the website. It is important to spend a lot of time in branding/looks etc as this is what sells. Take a look at the bodog model as well as other key affiliate sites (they have put a huge emphasis on branding).

Both are really important. While functionality and content make sure users can find what they are looking for, good design and userfriendly platforms work on the user subconscious and make him stay at the site.
i personally have been in sites containing all the info i was looking for and just left them after a couple of minutes cause they were to heavy!!!
Looks! (talking about size, colors position of banners etc) also, very important, organized! not those confusing sites where you have no other way to start searching using the site map.. loland of course efficient
I will admit looks at first, but ultimately it is functionality. Site can be as pretty as can be, but if I can't find what I need, then what good is it. Looks can only get you so far. IMO

hahahaha...When I read this I thought it was about what we go for in a mate...lol!....to which I'll not touch and save myself the flurey of comments from any sarcastic remarks I'm sure my comedic brilliance would be driven to make...lol.
However with a site I expect both - looks and functionality. If the site looks messy and is a pain to navigate I won't go back. Clean and sharp is what I like to see.
I find that unattractive websites have to work harder to get the same amount of attention. So, if a website is unattractive it better have a great personality. lol
I think a balance is important. Also, there's a certain amount evolution in the designs through time. A great website now, could look outdated in a year or two. I think both the appearance and the content should evolve together.
On top of what others have said, it is very important to remember to design your site around the visitors and NOT around the search engines. Just because it ranks high, you are not guaranteed high conversions.
The other thing to remember is that visitors will usually stay on your site for 3 seconds and if they have not seen what they are looking for within that time they will leave. They look top left, to top right, to bottom left to bottom right in a zig zag Z shape. So everything above the fold on your home page is most important.
You can also have a nice site without it being the bees knees in looks. Something practical, easy to find information will outdo anything that has all the bells and whistles and can't produce anything the visitor is looking for.

If you are starting from the beginning, worry about functionality first. "Usability" is underrated these days. Make your site easy to update and leave place for your offers. Then, plan your SEO because you need visitors before you can make money. After all that is set, worry about the pretty details. Plenty of ugly sites make money by having something unique and valuable to the readers.
Now, if only if were that easy to implement that strategy...
Thanks for all your comments, it's great to get an insight into how everyone weighs up the importance of looks and functionality. Appreciate the input...
Have a great day!
