    Default Malta Malta Malta

    Hi All,

I officially moved to to Malta as of 7pm Malta time yesterday (Sunday). I've moved from Leeds, UK. The last opinions I read on Malta before I moved here were on the Malta floods thread. Apart from seeing pictures of coffins floating arounds the streets, I was a little confused at how people view Malta...

...so I want to ask you why you love/don't love malta and what your top Malta tip would be for me?

    Thanks,
    Laura

    Good luck Laura.

I've never been to Malta but it's definitely on my list of places I'd like to see..

    Hi Laura,

As someone who has recently moved to Malta myself, my advice would be:

    • Buy an umbrella/wellies for the infrequent but heavy rain
    • Learn a route to work that you can walk, rather than taking a bus, sometimes they get caught in traffic and walking is quicker - it is for me anyway
    • When you buy bottled water, do it in bulk!
    • The 'Dubliner' in St Julian's serves an awesome Guinness if you are into that sort of thing
    • If you don't have a car, rent one for the weekend and drive about to see what's what. Although it's a small island, there is lots to see
    • Do a scuba diving course - it's the best place in the Med for it
    • Sunscreen

That's all i can think of for now.

If you need any help with anything, just give me a shout.

    Tom

    Hi Laura

This should give you some insight

    http://www.onlyinmalta.com/

I agree with Tom re learning routes to walk especially learning the back street routes, I wasted far too much time when I first moved here walking the long way round coast roads & as soon as you get some spare time take a trip to the neighbouring island Gozo as its a beautiful place

Hang on this is the second thread that has been full of good things to say about Malta, but I would like to give a different view.

A: Its too f&&&ing Hot. I like heat (i live in spain now) but when its 45 degress and 90% humidity? Thats too much! Thats May to October.

B: Its too f&&&king cold! between October and March it is freezing with icecold winds and a little bit of rain (Haha!)

C: Malta is an island but only has about five beaches over 10 yards long, and three of them are under 50 yards.

D: Maltese people are lovely but a little bit strange..........

My daughter was born in Malta and I don't want to put people off the place completely, but there are better versions of hell on the planet if you look around........

Sorry everyone I just thought the rose-tinted glasses were getting a bit clouded!

    Hi all,

Thanks Tom and Gemma for the advice. I certainly have to give the guiness a try, although I struggled to drink a half in Dublin so i'm not sure how i'll fair here. I must visit Gozo at my first opportunity as i've heard it's lovely.

I will definately have more question for you guys at some stage

Eugene - I don't have to work remotely, as Betfair have an office in Malta too. Aren't we lucky fellows

As for Pat, you rainmaker! :-p
I am worried about the scorcing hot summer, but i'll see what happens. But there is no way that a British person can complain about cold weather anywhere that doesn't get snow! But thanks for balancing out the opinions.

If anyone else has anymore views on this, i'd love to hear them.

    Thanks,
    Laura

Okay Laura, as you know I lived in Yorkshire too recently, so perhaps the Maltese winter wont seem to bad for you, but the summer will kill you!
I moved there after two years in Spain (I LOVE hot weather!) but it was STILL too hot for me. (I'm back in Spain now, Yorkshire killed me!)

Make sure you have aircon for the summer my dear.......

So where exactly have you moved to in Malta?

Can you still smoke in bars in Malta?

I have to say that's one of the best things about bars in Oz - you can't smoke in them anymore..

The worst thing was going home after a night out and smelling like an ashtray.. Granted, I still smoked up until just over 2 years ago, but even so, I couldn't bring myself to smoke inside after they stopped letting you do it in clubs and restaurants here.. I just felt dirty.

I like to have the choice, like an adult - tell me if smoking is going on inside and I'll make the decision whether to walk through the door.

I think places most appreciated are the ones that have an "indoor" outdoor area. Like a room in the middle of the club with no roof for smokers etc.. At least that way you're still inside, but you're just outside

I guess this is a yes and no. (my experience)

When i was there some months ago, one place i asked the bar staff if smoking were allowed, she said "yes, you can smoke, but if the police come you get a fine not us"

Yes thats often the case in some bars, they will have empty cans as ashtrays in disguise so it all looks innocent if the police come, of course this rule varies from bar to bar

The nice weather (most of the time) means its not so much of a hassle for smokers to sit outside

Lol yes, thats what happened, no ashtrays, only empty cans.

Since i am a adult and can take care of myself, i like these rules. Where is the free world ? If i had a bar it should be my call if people can smoke in there or not, instead of a stupid law.
