Default Matt Cutts Explains What To Expect In Next Few Months

Whats up every1. I was reading a blog post this morning and found a good video from Matt Cutts ( head of G webmaster spam team). It explains the basic concepts of developing good content, making the site user friendly which someone wants to bookmark and will come back too. Check out the video and the blog that I found it on.

I still think the old content is king rule will apply. Write good content, have a good website, engage with users on Facebook/twitter etc, post useful things and stick to Google guidelines and we should all be good

Yep - agreed. I have never been kicked by google (knock on wood) but then again I do not try to manipulate anything. I may not rank awesome like some sites that use "dirty" techniques but those rankings are always short lived. Slow and steady wins the race!

I couldn't agree more, "Slow and steady wins the race" is so true when it comes to SEO. Like yourself, touch wood, but we never had any problems when Penguin was released. But the same cannot be said for other affiliates, I recall talking to affiliate managers at the time and they told me all they'd heard was sob stories about dropped rankings. The bubble had to burst. Moving ahead google is only going to get stronger, their algorithms more finely tuned and spammy blackhat techniques will just not work. Even if by chance you are finding a way to trick google now, it will inevitability be stamped out, sooner rather than later. Build for the future, keep things clean and reap the rewards further down the line.

I've been seeing some pretty big movements in various serps that I track (not my sites), so it feels like somethings brewing. Wouldn't surprise me if it rolled out today - they seem to like doings things on a Friday.

(Also... you guys realise that buying/swapping links is considered manipulation, right?)

Agreed. I'm tired of seeing spam sites ranking for popular keywords.

I know this is reading TOO much into it, but I found it interesting that Cutts is very adamant that this is Penguin 2.0 - not 4 or whatever SEOMoz will number it. I curious if this update might focus somewhat on thin Web 2.0 sites used for SEO?

If you go on any blackhat forum you will find services that heavily use Web 2.0 sites. I have always hypothesized that eventually Google would detect these sites that I refer to as Spam 2.0 sites.

I doubt Penguin 2.0 will focus on only one type of link building but I wouldn't be surprised if some of these Web 2.0 networks that SEOers have built using thin, almost unreadable spun content will be hit. After all, I know many services churning them out as well as some of their clients that have gained increase SERPs.

Im more interested to know if the actual link disavow tool will work.
I have yet to hear of any gambling webmasters using this tool and it working.
This would be for sites that has super serp positions and lost them all and then gained them back. I just have this feeling once your hit thats it - there is no turning back.

I've never had any problems ranking but then again I don't mess about with the blackhat stuff. Sometimes I get paranoid when writing authentic content, not targeted at seo, that it might still be penalised for containing too many keywords or repetition so I always run a density check to try and not inadvertently trip a filter

I recently bought a domain with some semi spammy links pointing to it. I'd also be interested in peoples experiences with the disavow tool.

Following on from my comment earlier in the thread - did you know that your sig violates googles quality guidelines?

I mean we all do this stuff and nobodies squeaky clean, but I want you to be aware that a lot of people on this forum are saying that they're 100% white hat when it simply isn't true.

And if the big G releases an update specifically targeting sigs such as yours (which could easily happen seeing as keyword rich anchor text in a forum sig is actually used as an example in the quality guide) then your site could well get nuked.

@GFPC well Matt once said in a video that the disavow tool only "suggests" what Google should ignore, but their algorithm decides at the end whether or not it should ignore them links. He said that it's a smart algo and it can see if the given sites hurt you or not.

As for the turning back, they said it matters whether or not it was a manual or automatic penalty. If it's an automatic, once you have cleaned up what you need to, you should get back up. If it's manual, you will have to submit a reconsideration form, cause manual penalties can be only lifted up manually. This is also from a Matt Cutts video.

The trouble for me has always been when the reply is "You have not been penalized" in fact I have never been according to the responses of GWT, but some of the ranks had suffered a dropping.

Yeah i had a huge amount of top 10 spots in google for a site before penguin which destroyed it all - moving them past page 20-30 and i have files a dozen reconsiderations and google always says no penalty.

SO i did almost anything i can do and even used the disavow tool (which i think doesn't work anyways)

Its my opinion once hit with it that's it no turning back.

I was curious if anyone else used the disavow tool and noticed anything. I doubt it works.

I almost 100% believe penguin penality is permanent.

Yesterday I would have agreed with you, but I have a site that was obliterated from the SERP's that's just popped back up for its primary term. Albeit on page 5, but still - I see that as a positive sign.

I didn't use the disavow tool though, I actively went around removing suspicious links.

Yeah I am not sure that means your site was in a penguin filter and got out. I do think in my case i had a severe penguin hit cause i had at least 50 money keywords all on page 1 drop. Not a single keyword has come back. This is well over 1 year now and me editing every single page with new content and using the disavow tool to remove all Ls.

Basically like no site. To me this means once hit it probably is a complete hit for good. I have yet to see any sites to show me otherwise.

I also still believe google has made things worse in terms of serps. The results are just bad.

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know it violated the quality guidelines.

With only the one example to go on it's difficult to know where the line is being drawn. Looks like they updated their quality guidelines last October.
