    Default Moneybookers to Become Skrill

The popular online gaming payment method is in the process of rebranding their company from Moneybookers to Skrill, which is short for Skrilla, a slang word for money. Here's a link to more about it- http://www.casinofan.com/news-feed/n...pany-as-skrill

Yup saw that today and posted somewhere on it. I was a little concerned with this statement they make on this page..

    http://corporate.skrill.com/key_facts

The Skrill group is headquartered in London, UK. The group companies Moneybookers Ltd. and Moneybookers USA Inc. are regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) and US state regulators.

What part does the USA regulators play in this??

Moneybookers USA inc is licensed in the US - and has been since 2008.

The service can be used by US customers for auctions on ebay, ubid, yahoo and cnet.

US customers cannot use the service for any gambling related items.

Am I the only one who thinks this re-branding is ridiculous?

A mis-guided attempt to make the brand sound more trendy and hip?

They may have decided the name will be memorable and catchy but it appears to bear absolutely no relation to the service that they actually deliver and I, for one, have never heard it used as a slang name for change.

In fact a quick google of the word brought up THIS bizarre explanation.

The whole thing reminds me of when the Post Office in the UK decided to ditch the name they had enjoyed for a little under 400 years; a name which tells you exactly what they do.... and re-brand as...... Consignia

And then spend millions re-branding back to the original name a few months later!

No - you're not the only one.

I'd never heard of skrill / skrilla / whatever ... and the new name makes it sound like it's designed for cheap small unit purchases.

To me it's money spent to devalue the brand ...

Perhaps they want to focus on more languages other than english where moneybookers.com is a longer name that is English

I'm with the consensus on this: Skrill is a terrible name - it sounds like a poor '70s sci-fi/fantasy movie or comic book. One of those that harks back to Vietnam or Korea or something.

I think they're going to skrill themselves using that name!

This is so wrong it could be a viral ploy to get their name in the news.

They are waisting years of branding efforts and who knows how much in the brand value. This could be a business killer for them. They should have opened a new service or product and called it skrill under the moneybookers brand.

What a stupid name. Also does that mean I will have to change my nickname for them: Moneycrookers. After having money siphened from my account and they doing nothing about it I will never use them again especially when they try to rebrand their company to some kind of street word for money used by "gangstas".

Skrill is only one letter away from Shrill..

Wait, did I just say that?

Reminds me of when Vegemite came out with their new version and put a competition out to name it..

Then chose whoever sent in Vegemite 2.0..

    WTF?!

They changed it a few months later but it was in the news quite a bit.. Looks like they got what they wanted..

Maybe Moneyhookers is doing the same..

I wonder who is brilliant marketing guru behind this name change? Maybe he dreamed that people use Skrill as slang word for money? In what country - Burkina Faso? Never heard of it..!

This is going to be painful and costly ride for good old MB....

I dont think the name is too bad actually. I wonder if this has anything to do with the whole US situation....can't work out quite what but timing-wise it would make sense.

I think it's more likely that its some idiotic marketing idea, conceived in the head of a complete loon.

I don't think changing the name of the company is going to stop the US authorities coming down on them like a tonne of bricks.
